PANTHER BASEBALL TOPS CCNY, 4-1

Paul Valerio extends hit streak to 11 and Frank DiMaria fanned nine batters to improve to 2-0 on the season

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –  – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team defeated the visiting CCNY Beavers 4-1 at home on Saturday afternoon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury improves to 8-3 on the season while sending CCNY's record to 0-10. 

Brian Reutter put the Panthers up early with a sacrifice fly that scored Paul Valerio to give Old Westbury a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Old Westbury crossed the plate three more times in the third when John Angelino drove in Valerio and Reutter off a double down the left field line to make it 4-0.  CCNY scored their lone run in the sixth when Van Malloy stole second and Mike Smith advanced home on a throwing error by Old Westbury catcher Christopher DeGennaro

Paul Valerio extended his hit streak to 11 games with a first inning single to go along with two runs scored and four stolen bases in a 1-for-3 day at the plate.  John Angelino's double was the lone extra base hit in the game.  Max Muller collected a pair of singles in a 2-for-4 game at the plate while Mike Smith went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks for CCNY.

Frank DiMaria improved to 2-0 for Old Westbury, striking out nine while allowing an unearned run on six hits and one walk over seven innings.  Jonathan Costa worked a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to register his first save of the season.  CCNY's Alex David allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks in six innings of mound work.  Dilson Paulino tossed two perfect innings in relief of David.

CCNY outhit the Panthers 4-1 while Old Westbury swept six bags compared to the Beavers' three.  Old Westbury tallied 11 strikeouts and two walks as CCNY walked five Panthers.  CCNY had three errors on the day while Old Westbury had one.  Old Westbury stranded six runners on base and CCNY left eight on.
 
NEW PALTZ HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday (Mar. 11) against the visitng New Paltz Hawks from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
