OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team fell by the count of 5-3 in non-conference action against the visiting Vassar Brewers, Wednesday evening from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  With the loss, Old Westbury now stands at 16-6 heading into Skyline Conference weekend doubleheaders against Farmingdale State and Mount Saint Mary.  Vassar improved to 3-8 on the season. 

Vassar jumped out to a quick two run lead at the end of one as Jason Garfinkel doubled home Liam Lee and Kyle Casey for the games initial runs.  Vassar added solo runs in the second and fourth frames to take a 4-0 lead off Old Westbury starter Christopher VitaleBrian Walsh kept the inning alive in the sixth inning with a two-out pop error to shortstop Garfinkel that scored John Angelino for Old Westbury's first run, making it a 4-1 game. Vassar tacked on their fifth and final run in the eighth off reliever Tyler Levine on a run scoring single by Scott Allen.  Old Westbury answered in the bottom of the eighth as Brian Reutter reached on four balls, stole second and third and came around to score on a throwing error by catcher A.J. Kim.  Paul Valerio doubled home Tyler Hammett with two outs in the ninth to close the scoring.

Paul Valerio led the Panthers with his eighth multi-hit game of the season, collecting three hits in five trips to the plate.  Anthony Orsano followed with a 2-for-3 game at the plate while Christopher DeGennaro (1-3, BB) extended his hit streak to 18 games with a single in the fourth.  Brian Reutter snagged two bases for his sixth multi-steal game of the season.  Sean Morash paced Vassar offensively, producing two hits in three at bats with an RBI.  Jason Garfinkel (1-4, 2 RBI), Dan McCormack (1-4, R) and Dave Robbins (1-4, R) each registered doubles.

Christopher Vitale rang up six Brewers on strikes while allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over 5 innings to fall to 1-1 on the season.  Tyler Levine (R, 2 K's) worked three innings of relief followed by Stephen Chapter striking out two of three in the ninth.  Dennis Tario (1-0) picked up Vassar's win after logging two innings of shutout ball.  Zander Mrlik notched his first save of the season after giving up one run. 

Old Westbury held the advantage in hits (11-8) and stolen bases (2-1) while Vassar recorded a 3-1 edge in extra base hits.  Old Westbury stranded eight runners on base compared to Vassar's five.  Vassar also committed three errors.  Old Westbury pitchers tallied 10 strikeouts and four walks while Vassar had two strikeouts and six walks. 

FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for a Skyline Conference affair on Saturday (Mar. 31) on the road against the Farmingdale State Rams from the Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium.  First pitch of the doubleheader  is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Farmingdale, New York and LIVE STATS are available by logging onto http://livestats.prestosports.com/farmingdale/
