www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team fought back from an 11-3 deficit in the seventh to post a 12-11 come from behind victory over the Southern Maine Huskies on Sunday afternoon from Baseball Heaven. Old Westbury wins their fifth straight to improve to 5-2 on the season while sending the Huskies to 1-1 on the season.
Southern Maine got to Old Westbury starter
Ryan Bresnahan early, posting seven runs over the first three frames to take a 7-2 lead. Bresnahan settled down in the fourth and fifth innings before the Huskies tacked on three more runs in the sixth to put an end to Bresnahan's outing. Trailing 11-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Jacob Coners sparked Old Westbury with a two out pinch hit walk.
Paul Valerio and
Brian Reutter followed with back-to-back singles that scored Coners.
Anthony Orsano delivered a two run single for Old Westbury's third straight hit to make it 11-6. Four more Panthers crossed the plate in the eighth to cut the deficit to one run as Coners singled down the left field line to drive home
Chris DeGennaro and
Tyler Hammett. Back-to-back fielders choice's scored
Blake Barbeito and Coners.
John Angelino set the table in the ninth with a leadoff triple followed by
Brian Walsh's single to knot the game at 11-11. Four batters later, Coners struck again with the game winning sacrifice fly to score Walsh as Old Westbury won their second straight come from behind victory.
Brian Reutter collected three hits in five trips to the plate to lead Old Westbury in hitting, in addition to knocking in two runs and scoring one.
Jacob Coners ignited the Panthers as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and finished with a 1-for-1 game at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
Chris DeGennaro (2-4, 2 R) added
Anthony Orsano (2-5, 3 RBI) multiple hits while DeGennaro,
Paul Valerio and
Tyler Hammett each scored twice. David Ricker (3-4, 2 RBI, 3 R) and Chris Bernard (3-5, 2 RBI, R) both led Southern Maine with three hits apiece. Forrest Chadwick clubbed a two-run homer in the sixth and finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
Matthew Andress fanned two batters and worked a perfect 1.2 innings of relief to earn his first victory of the season. Old Westbury starter
Ryan Bresnahan did not factor into the decision and was tapped for nine earned runs off 11 hits over six innings of mound work. Luke Hammond took the loss for Southern Maine, giving up two runs on three hits and dealing out one free pass while recording just three outs.
Southern Maine outhit Old Westbury 15-13, including 4-3 in extra base hits. Both teams stole two bases and Old Westbury stranded seven runners on base compared to six for Southern Maine. Old Westbury struck out two batters and walked two while Southern Maine recorded two strikeouts and issued seven free passes.
