PANTHER BASEBALL PITCHES GAME TWO SHUTOUT TO SPLIT SKYLINE CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

Mount Saint Mary topped Old Westbury 10-4 in the opener before Panthers stormed back with 8-0 blanking in game two

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the visiting Mount Saint Mary Knights on Sunday afternoon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Mount Saint Mary took the opener, 10-4, before Old Westbury claimed the finale with an 8-0 win, marking their fourth shutout of the season.  Old Westbury (18-8) now stands at 7-3 in conference action while Mount Saint Mary (13-9) moved to 6-2. 

Mount Saint Mary grabbed hold of the game early on, tagging Old Westbury starter Ryan Bresnahan with four runs in the opening frame off five hits and one error.  Mount Saint Mary tacked on two more runs in the fourth to make it a 6-0 game.  Christopher DeGennaro slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-2.  Four more runs crossed the plate for Mount Saint Mary in the eighth off reliever James RoubalSteve Mare reached on a fielders choice to score Brian Walsh and two batters later Blake Barbeito singled home Mare to close out the scoring. 

Steve Mare (3-4, RBI, R) and Christopher DeGennaro (3-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) paced Old Westbury with three hits apiece.  DeGennaro's fourth inning homer was his first of the season and was the lone extra base hit of the game.  Alex Velardi (4-5, 3 R, RBI) banged out a game-high four hits to lead Mount Saint Mary.  Michael Matuk (3-4, RBI, R) followed with three hits and Vinnie Carminati (2-4, RBI, 2-R) added two.  John Conroy drove in three runners and scored one in a 1-for-2 game at the plate.

Ryan Bresnahan (3-2) took the loss for Old Westbury, surrendering six runs (five earned) off nine hits and three walks despite fanning a career-high seven batters.  Dan McCrea (4-1) was victorious for Mount Saint Mary, striking out two and served up two runs off eight hits and three walks. 

Mount Saint Mary outhit the Panthers, 14-12, while Old Westbury stranded 11 runners on base compared to the Knights' seven.  Old Westbury committed three errors on the game.  On the mound, Old Westbury registered 10 strikeouts and four walks as Mount Saint Mary had three strikeouts and five walks. 

In the finale, Old Westbury played the role as the aggressor, scoring two runs in the opening frame.  Anthony Orsano's infield grounder scored Paul Valerio for the games initial run.  John Angelino followed with a double to left center, stole third and scored on a passed ball.  In the fourth, Steve Mare poked a run scoring single through the right side to score Angelino.  Two innings later, Old Westbury collected five runs off four hits to take an eight run lead.  DeGennaro doubled home Brian Walsh followed by Michael Weingartner's run scoring single.  Two batters later, Paul Valerio scored two off a double to left and Blake Barbeito closed out the scoring by crossing the plate off a wild pitch.

Brian Walsh pounded out three hits and scored one run to lead the Panther offense.  Paul Valerio registered his ninth multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.  John Angelino scored two runs and Steve Mare (1-2, RBI, R) extended his hit streak to 10-games with a single in the fourth.  Michael Matuk and Vinnie Carminati accounted for both of Mount Saint Mary's hits on the game. 

Frank DiMaria (3-0) notched his first career complete game shutout, striking out five over seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks.  Joe CoFrancesco was tabbed with Mount Saint Mary's loss, serving up eight runs on eight hits and four walks in 5.2 innings of work.

Old Westbury held the advantage in hits (9-2), extra base hits (3-0) and stolen bases (3-0) while Mount Saint Mary abandoned six runners on base, compared to OW's three.
