STATEN ISLAND, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Staten Island Dolphins on the road Tuesday evening from the CSI Softball Complex. Staten Island edged the Panthers in the opener, 5-3, before Old Westbury capped off the twin bill with a 4-2 series splitting victory. Old Westbury now stands at 12-12 on the season, while Staten Island moved to 7-11.
Alyssa Clancy got things started with a RBI single to score
Marissa Brightman in the first inning. Staten Island answered with three in the home half of the first, kicked-off by Kaitlyn Flynn's two-run triple. Kristi Dillon singled home Victoria Procopio in the second to make it a 4-1 game. Old Westbury cut into the deficit with a two-run third inning as
Jessica Colucci and
Lauren Isaac launched back-to-back run scoring doubles. Brittany Smith scored as she advanced home on the throw off a stolen second base by Flynn in the fifth to close out the scoring for Staten Island.
Jessica Colucci led Old Westbury at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a RBI double and one run scored. Seven different Panthers made it into the hit column, including four doubles. Brittany Smith (3-3, 2 R) and Kaitlin Flynn (3-3, 2 RBI, R) paced Staten Island with three hits apiece.
Deborah Ciccarelli was charged with the loss, serving up five runs (four earned) in six innings off eight hits. Danielle Ponsiglion picked up CSI's win, striking out four while allowing three runs off seven hits and a walk.
In game two, Kaitlyn Flynn led Staten Island with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including driving in two runs in the third inning for an early 2-0 lead. Old Westbury answered in the fourth with a run-scoring double by
Jessica Colucci to cut into the deficit in half.
Samantha Siegler scored the go-ahead run in the sixth off a fielders choice followed by Colucci's RBI double to score
Lauren Isaac. Colucci doubled twice to drive in a pair of runs for Old Westbury while
Samantha Siegler (2-4, RBI, R) and
Alyssa Clancy (2-3) added multiple hits.
Alyssa Clancy pitched a great game in the circle, striking out 12 Staten Island batters and surrendered two unearned runs off four hits and a walk. Victoria Procopio was dealt the loss, giving up four runs off eight hits and two walks.
PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR THE OLD WESTBURY PANTHERS: The Panthers are back in action on Saturday (April 14) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the visiting Purchase Panthers from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
