PANTHER BASEBALL RUNS PAST BARUCH, 9-4

BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team registered their third straight victory Thursday afternoon against the Baruch Bearcats from MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.  Old Westbury climbs to 24-9 on the season while the Bearcats dropped to 17-15. 

Steven Mare opened the second with a single, advanced on third baseman Yancy Tavaras' error that landed Jacob Coners on first in the opening frame. Old Westbury produced a double steal, followed by catcher Thommy DeJesus' throwing error that scored Mare and moved Coners over to third.  Blake Barbeito smacked an infield grounder to add Coners to the run total.  Three batters later, Anthony Orsano lifted a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Paul ValerioSteve Mare rolled a run-scoring infield single to put Old Westbury up 4-0 in the third.  Steve Hession stroked a two-run single in the third to cut Baruch's deficit down to 4-2.  In the fifth, John Angelino and Brian Walsh crossed the plate on wild pitches to score Old Westbury's fifth and sixth runs.  Anthony Orsano broke out a two-run single in the sixth and later scored when Coners forced a bases loaded walk.  DeJesus hit a run-scoring single in the sixth and Hession scored off second baseman Steve Mare's error to cap the scoring at 9-4.

Anthony Orsano's three RBI's led five over Panthers with multi-hit games as Old Westbury's one-thru-five hitters combined to hit 10-19 with seven runs scored, three RBI, eight walks and six stolen bases.  Paul Valerio (2-3, 2 R, 2 BB) grabbed a career-best five stolen bases while Steve Mare (2-2, RBI, R, 3 BB) followed with four.  Steve Hession racked up a game-high three hits while producing three RBI's and one run scored to lead Baruch. 

Tyler Levine (1-0) grabbed his first victory of the season by throwing the first four innings, striking out four, surrendering two runs off five hits before reliever Frank DiMaria fanned six Baruch batters while giving up one run over three innings.  Eric Peralta was tagged with Baruch's loss, serving up eight runs (six earned) off 10 hits and nine walks. 

MARITIME PRIVATEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Friday (Apr. 20) against the Maritime Privateers in Throggs Neck, New York.  First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. from the Maritime Baseball Field.
