Gameday Program
LEVITTOWN, NYÂ (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -Â The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team rolled past the Yeshiva Maccabees (1-7, 1-5) Tuesday evening in a match that was played at MacArthur High School in Levittown. The 3-0 Skyline Conference victory improved the Panthers' overall record to 8-5-2 and 4-2-1 in Skyline play.
Old Westbury targeted Yeshiva's high defensive line early and found success. In the 11
th minute a streaking
Angelo DiMatteo found space down the right side and crossed a pin-perfect ball into the box for a waiting
Scott Carey, who, unmarked, headed home his second goal of the season.
The second goal came in the 22
nd minute, when the Panthers again found themselves behind enemy defenders and in scoring position. A 40-yard, left-side cross into the box found towering
Michael Bayne, who flicked the ball behind him before
Kevin Skaalerud pounced on it in the six-yard box and found the back of the net.
Old Westbury carried its two-goal lead into halftime before eventually registering its last tally of the match in the 72
nd minute. Carey again was the difference maker, as he found Adan-Cruz Velasquez on the edge of the box. The freshman volleyed the ball with his chest with his back toward goal before turning and firing an attempt past Yeshiva keeper Doron David for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
In net,
Marcelo Guardado tied alumnus
Pablo Diaz for most shutouts in one season in the San Filippo era with five. It was also the senior's fourth clean sheet in his last five starts. Â
Overall it was an impressing showing for the Panthers, who outshot Yeshiva 27-7 (13-3 on goal). The forwards and midfielders did well to find each other and open space in the final third, and as a result, Old Westbury created a plethora of scoring opportunities.
