OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team (5-15) rallied back from a first-set loss to defeat the York Cardinals (5-17) 3-1 on Senior Day Tuesday evening from the Clark Athletic Center.
In a pregame ceremony, Old Westbury honored its four seniors—
Kimberly Catania (2010-13),
Samantha Howley (2010-13),
Jocelyn Small (2012-13) and
Mudeline Derisma (2012-13)—but it was York that came out flying once the opening whistle blew.
After surrendering five of the first seven points, the Panthers battled back to tie the set at seven, but York put together a run of their own, taking 11 of the next 16 points, placing themselves firmly in the lead. The Cardinals eventually took the set 25-20, out-htting the Panthers .138 to .025.
But after Old Westbury's subpar first set, the Panthers never looked back. They took the second set 25-16, despite connecting on fewer attacks.
In the third set, York battled back from falling behind 7-2 by putting together a nine-point run to take the lead, 11-7. Old Westbury then won the next seven points before eventually outlasting the Cardinals and winning the set 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Panthers severely out-hit their opponents (.126-.062) en route to a 25-23 set and 3-1 match victory.
