Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team split its two games of the Skyline Conference tri-match Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center, beating Maritime 3-0 and losing to St. Joseph's-L.I. 3-1.

The Panthers (6-16, 2-6 Skyline) pounced on their first opponent, Maritime (2-27, 0-8 Skyline), early, taking a 15-2 lead in the first set thanks to two separate six-point rallies. Firing at a .500 attack completion rate, Old Westbury stormed to a 25-7 victory.

In the second set, Old Westbury jumped out to another early lead, this time winning eight of the first nine points. Despite hitting at only .214 completion, the Panthers fended off the Privateers again in simple fashion, 25-10.

Maritime took its first and only leads of the match early in the third set, and through the first ten points the teams were knotted at 5-5. But the Panthers grabbed the next seven points and again put the set out of Maritime's reach. Again attacking at 50%, Old Westbury won by the final score of 25-11.

Rayn Brown and Jocelyn Small shone for the Panthers, picking up 10 kills each. It was the sixth time this season Brown reached double digits and the tenth time for Small—who hit for at .562 percent. Brown also picked up a season-high six aces.

Kimberly Catania served up 20 assists, which is the fourth-best match total of the season, while Allie Giancola scooped up 10 digs.

In the second match with St. Joseph's-L.I. (16-11, 6-2 Skyline), the Panthers came out strong and kept the score tight, but a late-game run saw the Golden Eagles win nine of the last 12 points and the set 25-16.

The second set, though, was all St. Joseph's-L.I. When the score was 3-3, the Golden Eagles shifted into overdrive and claimed 23 of the final 31 points to complete a 25-11 set win.

Old Westbury stormed back in the third set, in what was dramatic fashion. Both sides took leads at several different points, but the Panthers outlasted St. Joseph's-L.I. in the end and took the set 25-21.

But the Panthers' third-set heroics were in vain, as the Golden Eagles won another tightly contested set. Despite the Panthers firing at their best attacking percentage of the match (.167), St. Joseph's-L.I. outlasted Old Westbury and took the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Catania yet again, who picked up 11 kills and 19 assists. Small also added 11 kills while Giancola dug-out 28 balls.

NEW JERSEY CITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS THE CATHOLIC CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Firday (Nov. 1st) when they take on the New Jersey City Gothic Knights and the Catholic Cardinals for a non-conference tri-match. The Panthers open play against New Jersey City at 4 p.m. and close out the evening against Catholic at 8 p.m. from the John J. Moore Athletic Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
