OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team (11-7) won its third game in a row Wednesday afternoon, when they defeated a strong Brooklyn Bulldogs (13-3) side 2-1 in double overtime. Old Westbury's win, which came at Panther Park, tied a program single-season win record.
Despite falling behind again early—this time in the third minute by way of Sayla Flores—Old Westbury again found a way to rally.
Stephanie Maybie scored her 14th goal of the season in 20th minute, when she received a high, searching ball from central defender
Sara Bey. Maybie then cut into the middle from the left side before scoring with a sweet left-footed finish into the bottom left corner. The tally moved the junior into fourth place among Skyline Conference goal scorers.
A deadlock plagued the second half, with neither team creating any menacing attacks, and as a result, overtime ensued.
But there would be a winner in the game, and it came in double overtime, when
JoAnna Kettell—streaking down the left side—found
Jordan Schildt on the edge of the box. Schildt steadied the ball and beat Brooklyn keeper Kimberly Chacko with a side-footed finish. Schildt's second goal of the season was also her second career game-winner.
Caitlin Thomas registered her 11th win of the season, recording four saves. The Panthers outshot the Bulldogs 20-12 (10-7 on target).
NYU-POLY FIGHTING JAYS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: The Panthers return to the pitch for their final regular-season home game on Thursday (Oct. 31) for a Skyline Conference matchup with the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. from Panther Park.
