Sharp Shooting @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball Edged at New Rochelle

Old Westbury’s road woes continue in 90-85 setback despite shooting a season best 50 percent from the field


NEW ROCHELLE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team (1-3) fell to the New Rochelle Blue Angels (4-1) in a non-conference road thriller, 90-85, at The Wellness Center Tuesday evening.

The Blue Angels took a 48-35 lead into halftime after Ja'Nasha King dropped in a layup with six seconds remaining in the opening period. 

New Rochelle used an 11-4 spurt over the opening 2:22 in the second half gave them its largest lead of the game.  Old Westbury trailed the entire second half before taking the lead with 5:26 left in regulation after DeAndra Scott converted on a successful trip to the free throw line for a 73-72 advantage.  Moments later, Jasmine Robinson put Old Westbury ahead, 77-76, with a layup at the 3:53 mark.  New Rochelle answered down the stretch with a 12-1 run from 3:15 to 1:09 to grab an 88-78 lead.  Old Westbury scored the final five points of the game, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.    

Scott led the Panthers in scoring with 29 points on 12-of-23 shooting and brought down seven rebounds.  Jasmine Robinson followed with career highs of 17 points and five assists while Clarissa Gallagher added 13 points, eight rebounds (tied career high), four steals (career high) and four assists (tied career high).  Raven Price added her first career double-double, pouring in 11 points while pulling down a career best 15 rebounds in addition to recording three steals and two blocked shots off the bench.  Elsa Hiraldo contributed careers highs of nine points, nine rebounds and five assists. 

Jay-Leah Ellis was a force for New Rochelle as she led all scorers with 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.  Jasmine Brandon followed with 23 points while Molly Cammarota (13 points) and Alyssa Pechin (10 points) scored in double-digits. 

Having won its previous game by 23 points heading into Tuesday, the Panthers were held to just one three-pointer, shooting 16.7 percent behind the arc.  Inside the arc, Old Westbury connected on a season best 50 percent from the field (34-68).  New Rochelle put up 21 more shots than Old Westbury, finishing the game with a 38.2 percent shooting rate from the floor (34-89), hitting on just 5-of-24 from three-point territory (20.8 percent).  The Blue Angels also outshot the Panthers from the free throw line 65.4 percent (17-26) to 61.5 percent (16-26).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 55-47, while New Rochelle turned 20 offensive rebounds in 20 second chance points and scored 30 points off 25 Panther miscues. 

SUNY COBLESKILL FIGHTING TIGERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS ON ALUMNI DAY: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Sunday (December 1) for a non-conference tilt against the visiting SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers in Old Westbury, New York.  Prior to the 12 p.m. tip-off from Clark Athletic Center, the alumni will battle each other at 10 a.m.
