www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The No. 23 ranked SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Frostburg State Bobcats on Sunday in Crozet, Virginia to win their season-opening series, 2-1. Old Westbury won game one Sunday, 5-2, before taking game two 12-7. Old Westbury is now 2-1 on the 2013 season while Frostburg State now sits at 3-3.
Old Westbury got on the board first in game one as
John Angelino roped his first homerun of the season and the fourth of his career in the top of the second, launching a two out shot over the center field fence. Frostburg State tied the game in the bottom of the second with a Matt Donaldson one out single that scored Jon Keeler.
Donaldson led off the fifth with a double and two batters later scored on a Garrett Price sacrifice fly to go ahead 2-1.
Old Westbury scored four runs on five hits in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Brian Walsh tied the game with a grounder that scored
Paul Valerio and
Jonathan Pagan followed with a grounder to score
Jeremy Delgado for the game winning run. Three batters later,
Peter Romeo singled in
Kevin Licul, and
Eddie Hernandez drew a bases loaded walk two batters later that scored Angelino to close out the scoring.
Jeremy Delgado (2-4, R, SB) and
Brandon Stein (2-3) each contributed a pair of hits and
John Angelino's big fly led Panthers offensively.
Arismendy Nunez (1-0) fanned three batters and snagged the win after scattering six hits and two walks over six innings.
Alex DiSanto recorded the final three outs in the seventh to record his first save of the season.
Matt Donaldson (2-3, 2B, RBI. R), Kevin Kean (2-3) and Jon Keeler (2-3, 2B, R) paced Frostburg State with multiple hits. Cody Ellsworth (1-1) surrendered three runs on five hits in five innings and was tapped with the loss.
Old Westbury squeezed out eight hits compared to Frostburg State's six and the Bobcats held a 2-1 edge in extra base hits.
In game two, Frostburg State got on the board first as Kean stroked a leadoff homer to put the Bobcats ahead in the first. Old Westbury replied in the second with a pair of round trippers to go up 6-1.
Jonathan Pagan led off the frame with his second homerun of the season. Three straight singles loaded the bases for
Jeremy Delgado, who cleared them with a grand slam over the right field fence.
Rob Jennings scored two runs off his two out double in the third to slice the Frostburg State deficit to three runs. Old Westbury took a 7-3 lead off
Peter Romeo's leadoff homer in the fourth inning, his first of the season.
Reliever
James Roubal allowed a Kean RBI single in the fourth and
Matthew Andress served up a Jennings RBI single in the fifth as Frostburg State scored in three consecutive innings.
Old Westbury added one in the fifth and two more multi score innings in the sixth and seventh frames.
Kevin Licul hit an RBI single in the fifth, Romero scored on a throwing error and Delgado lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth. In the seventh,
Jacob Coners doubled home Pagan and Romeo's sacrifice fly scored Coners.
Frostburg State tacked on two more runs in the seventh off
Tyler Kapela, scoring off a Danny Morris sacrifice fly and a Kean RBI single to close out the scoring.
Peter Romeo's (3-3, HR, 2-RBI, 3R) three hits paced Old Westbury offensively while
Jonathan Pagan (2-4, HR, 2 R) followed with multiple hits and
Jeremy Delgado (1-5, HR, 5-RBI. 2 R) drove in five runs.
James Roubal (1-0) grabbed the win afte working the fourth inning in relief of starter
Stephen Chapter, who fanned three while giving up three runs in three innings.
Kevin Kean (3-3, HR, 3-RBI, 2R, 2 BB), Rob Jennings (3-4, 3-RBI, 2B, 3B, R) and Jon Keeler (3-4, R, 2B) banged out three hits apiece to led Frostburg State. Austin Poretz (1-1) served up six runs in two innings and was saddled with Frostburg State's loss. Curtis Randall fanned five Panthers in three innings of relief work.
Old Westbury held a 10-9 hitting advantage, including a 5-4 extra base edge. Old Westbury stole five bases compared to the Bobcats' two.
ITHACA BOMBERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Friday (Mar. 1) for a non-conference showdown with No. 29 Ithaca Bombers in Yaphank, New York. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. from Baseball Heaven.
