Old Westbury returns home Thursday to close out their non-conference schedule against the Saint Joseph Blue Jays

www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team overcame a first-half deficit and took a brief lead in the second-half before the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears used a 24-6 run to hand the Panthers an 87-75 setback Tuesday evening from Brooklyn Technical High School. Old Westbury falls to 12-9 on the season while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn improved to 13-10.
Old Westbury went down early on and trailed throughout the opening half. Following a
Raven Pentz jumper, Teresa Mangan nailed a three-pointer to give the Bears at 23-17 lead. Despite missing seven straight field goals over a 5:09 stretch, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn hit 6-of-7 from the charity stripe as part of a 20-6 run from 12:43 to 4:46 to grab a 40-23 lead. Old Westbury answered with a 20-5 run to close out the half, slicing the deficit to 45-43 at intermission.
Pentz connected on a three-pointer just 39 seconds into the second half to give Old Westbury their first lead of the game, 46-45. Mangan and Pentz traded buckets and a jumper by
Abigail Williams with 17:50 showing on the clock had Old Westbury in front by three, 50-47. Two minutes later, a field goal by
DeAndra Scott tied the game at 52-all for Old Westbury. Scott drained her first triple of the season 1:34 later, giving Old Westbury a slim 57-56 lead. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn went up big again, using a 24-6 run from 14:35 to 6:51 to take an 80-63 lead.
Clarissa Gallagher drained her third trey of the game to stop the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn run, making it a 14 point game.
Abigail Williams and
DeAndra Scott both sank field goals to pull within 10 points, with 5:51 remaining. That would be as close as Old Westbury would get as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn closed out the game on a 17-5 scoring spree.
DeAndra Scott's sixth straight double-double paced Old Westbury. Scott led all scorers and rebounders with 23 and 13, respectively, hitting on 10-of-22 from the field.
Clarissa Gallagher followed with 14 points, hitting on 3-of-10 from three-point land to go along with three steals.
Raven Pentz added nine points and three steals while
Abigail Williams pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds.
Teresa Mangan's 19 points and six assists led four other Bears in double-digit scoring. Taylor Raccuglia registered 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks and Kelly McNamee poured in 13 points. Samantha Retas tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds while Janine Doran contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Old Westbury shot 34.5 percent from the field (29-84), 35.3 percent from three-point territory (6-17) and 64.7 percent from the free-throw line (11-17). Old Westbury's 84 shots hoisted up were the most since firing 85 against SUNYIT on December 11, 2011. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn hit 46.9 percent from the floor (30-64), 35 percent from beyond the arc (7-20) and 64.5 percent from the line (20-31). Old Westbury won the boards battle, 54-47, scoring just 16 second chance points off 21 offensive rebounds. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn converted 19 Old Westbury turnovers into 19 points.
