(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's lacrosse team recorded the program's historic first victory on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners, 18-7, from Brooks Stadium in Kings Point, New York. 

Old Westbury (1-5) outshot USMMA (0-5), 43-18, in the game, and made good on six out of 11 free-position shots.  The Panthers outmuscled the Mariners to the tune of a 15-12 edge in draw controls.

Courtney Gallagher was a force on the field for the Panthers as she recorded five of Old Westbury's 15 draw controls.  Gallagher also put three shots in the back of the Mariners' net, dished out one assist and picked up five ground balls on the day.  Anna Noens scored four goals, tallied one assist, scooped up three ground balls, won three draw controls to go along with four caused turnovers.  Off the bench, JoAnna Kettell sparked the reserves with four goals, one assist, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.  Noens and Kettell led all players with five points each on the day.  Jessica Walker scored three goals on four shots and nabbed two draw controls.  On the defensive side of the field, Jordan Schildt picked up five ground balls, and contributed offensively with two goals.  Gabriella DiPierno and Monika Santelli each rattled the back of the cage with solo goals.  

In goal, Sara Braverman (1-5) stopped five shots to help Old Westbury to the historic win.   

For the Mariners, Caitlin McCabe was the effective offensive leader with two goals on two shots.  Alexandra Winfree and Kristen Bell also added a pair of goals in the setback, while Bell won six draw controls.  Defensively, McCabe had two ground balls and goalie Kelly Allison (0-5) made 17 shots in defeat.   

USMMA started the game off with a bang as Alexandra Winfree raced down the field and blasted a shot past Old Westbury's goalie to draw first blood 4:04 into the game.  Courtney Gallagher leveled the game 2:12 later with a free-position goal to spark a 6-0 Old Westbury run.  Emily McCabe scored back-to-back goals to slice the deficit for USMMA, making it a 6-3 game with 10:31 remaining.  JoAnna Kettell scored her third goal of the half with 5:19 showing on the clock to record to programs first-ever game winning goal.

In the second half, the Panthers were rarely threatened as they outscored USMMA 8-2 over the final 30 minutes.  Jessica Wiley opened the second half scoring with a USMMA goal 2:13 into play.  Anna Noens' goal with 23:16 left ignited a 5-0 Panther run.  The Panthers sealed the victory with 4:57 left when Kettell tallied her fourth goal of the game to close out the scoring. 

MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Thursday (March 21) for a Skyline Conference clash with the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins from St. Joseph's College-L.I. Outdoor Athletic Complex.  Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Patchogue, New York.
