BROOKLYN, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team split a non-conference road doubleheader with the Brooklyn Bulldogs (6-2) Wednesday evening from Campus Field. The Panthers lost the opener, 5-3, and bounced back to win 6-0 in the finale. With the split, Old Westbury moves to 5-3 on the season with the conference schedule opening up this weekend.
Game One: Brooklyn 5, Old Westbury 3
Brooklyn would be the first to light up the scoreboard as Samantha Rodriguez singled home Kim Konklewski to take a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning.
Brooklyn clinched the game in the fifth, scoring four runs, highlighted by a Stephanie Caravello two-run double, the only extra base hit of the game.
In the sixth,
Alyssa Clancy drove in
Alex Heaney and
Nicole Petrucci to put Old Westbury on the board with a two-run single.
The Panthers came within two of Brooklyn in the top of the seventh, as
Alex Heaney scored
Jessica Spero off an infield grounder with two outs. Kayla Hill induced Petrucci into an infield fly to end the comeback attempt.
Alyssa Clancy (5-3) suffered her third loss of the season, striking out three while allowing five runs (four earned) off nine hits in six innings. Clancy also led the Old Westbury offense as she went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI.
Samantha Rodriguez (2-3, 2 RBI) and Stephanie Caravello (1-3, 2 RBI, R) each drove in a pair of runs to lead Brooklyn. Kayla Hill earned the complete game victory, improving to 3-1 on the season after allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out five.
Game Two: Old Westbury 6, Brooklyn 0
After a scoreless first inning, Old Westbury got on the scoreboard in the second.
Jennifer Jean set the table with a leadoff single and
Corrine Protasiewicz then stepped to the plate and scored along with Jean after reached on a fielding error.
Jean added Old Westbury's third run in the third frame when she drove a triple into right field to score
Alyssa Clancy. Protasiewicz followed with a run scoring single to send Jean home for a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers increased their lead in the sixth when Jean clubbed her second homerun and 11th RBI of the season with a solo shot to lead off the inning.
Nicole Petrucci put Old Westbury up 6-0 with a triple that scored
Alex Heaney in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Alyssa Clancy (5-3) shut the door and clinched the Old Westbury victory, sitting down the Bulldogs one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, Clancy fanned five and scattered four hits to post her 25th career shutout.
Jennifer Jean led the Panthers at the plate in game two as she went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Amanda Bisz (2-1) took Brooklyn's loss and was charged with six runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk. Samantha Rodriguez (2-for-3) collected a pair of singles and stole one base to pace lead Brooklyn offensively.
FARMINGALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (March 23) for a Skyline Conferene opener on the road with the Farmingdale State Rams in Farmingdale, New York. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m from Rams Field.
