BROOKLYN, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team traveled to Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon to take on the Rams in the Skyline Conference opener for both clubs. The Rams double dipped the Panthers, winning 6-2 in the opener, and edging Old Westbury, 1-0, in the finale. The Rams improve to 4-7 overall and 2-0 in conference action while the Panthers fall to 5-4, 0-2 in league play.
Game One: Farmingdale State 6, Old Westbury 2
Meghan Anderson's three-run bases-loaded RBI double in the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 tie, lifting the Rams to the game one win.
With one out in the sixth,
Marissa Brightman and Joanna Carillo reached base on consecutive Old Westbury errors. The ninth place hitter, Sam Johrden laid down a bunt single moving both runners up 60 feet. Farmingdale State turned their lineup over for Anderson, who smacked a double, plating all three base-runners, giving the hosts a 5-2 edge. She quickly crossed the plate on a Hillary Genova RBI single for a 6-2 Farmingdale State cushion.
The Panthers took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when
Jessica Spero reached base on an RBI error, scoring both
Jennifer Jean and
Alyssa Clancy. Old Westbury opened the second inning with three straight singles off the bats of Clancy, Jean, and
Corrine Protasiewicz. Two batters later, Spero's chopper was misplayed by the Rams second baseman, plating home both Jean and Clancy.
In the Rams' fourth, Farmingdale State sliced the deficit to one, 2-1, courtesy of a two-out rally. Kristen Flint singled and two batters later Brightman delivered an RBI single, scoring Flint from second. In the next inning for Farmingdale State, Johrden started the fifth by reaching base on a Panthers' miscue. She was pushed to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts and scored on a Michelle Monigello RBI base-hit, tying the game at 2-2.
Jennifer Jarczynski batted 2-for-4 and Anderson went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored for Farmingdale State.
Nicole Petrucci, Clancy, and Protasiewicz all had two hits apiece for the Panthers.
Taylor Tedeschi (3-3) notched the complete game win for the Rams by allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and striking out five. Clancy (5-4) yielded six runs on nine hits while fanning four in the loss.
Game Two: Farmingdale State 1, Old Westbury 0
In a highly contested pitchers' duel where there were only four hits combined, Farmingdale State squeezed out a 1-0 win. Both starters went the distance as Farmingdale State's starter Taylor Webb (2-4) struck out six and allowed one hit while Old Westbury starter
Alyssa Clancy (5-5) allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work.
Over the first three innings of play, both teams were retired in order. With two outs in the Panthers' fourth, Clancy recorded the lone Old Westbury hit with a single, but was stranded on first when Webb struck out
Jacqui Alvarado swinging.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth. With two-outs in the inning, Mongiello reached based on an error and rounded the bases when Old Westbury misplayed Jarcynzki's single.
