Old Westbury’s offense shines late in 7-6 come from behind victory

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team overcame a five run deficit to earn a 7-6 non-conference win over the visiting New Paltz Hawks on Wednesday afternoon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury improves to 7-9 on the season while New Paltz slips to 3-11.

Old Westbury fell behind 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.  A throwing error and a wild pitch allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate in the fifth to spark the comeback. 

Three more runs off one hit and two errors in the seventh tied the game at six for Old Westbury.  Eddie Hernandez scored on a passed ball to start the scoring.  Jeremy Delgado then singled and advanced to second on a throwing error which allowed Brian Walsh to score his second run of the game.  John Angelino scored off a passed ball to tie the game. 

Pinch hitter Jacob Coners singled to lead off the eighth before Steve Mare advanced him into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt.  Paul Valerio then followed with a single to left center to plate home Coners for the game-winning run.

Alex DiSanto closed out the game for Old Westbury, retiring two of his three batters faced on strikes to earn his third save of the season.  Tyler Kapela (1-1) pitched scoreless seventh and eighth frames to record his first career win.   

Christian Huertas (0-1) served up the game winner and recorded three outs in the eighth to earn the loss. 

Peter Romeo collected a pair of Old Westbury's hits and scored one run while Brian Walsh scored twice and drew a pair of walks to go along with two stolen bases.  Eddie Hernandez also scored two runs and was dealt a pair of free passes.

David Lostaglio (2-3, 2 RBI) and Matt Dixon (2-4, RBI) paced New Paltz with a pair of hits and Matt Prescia (1-4) scored two runs.  

ONEONTA STATE RED DRAGONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Thursday (March 28) at 11 a.m. when they host the Oneonta State Red Dragons for a non-conference doubleheader from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
