www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team took care of the Purchase Panthers Sunday afternoon in the “Battle of the SUNY Panthers” Skyline Conference doubleheader in Purchase, New York.
Alyssa Clancy tossed a pair of one-hitters as Old Westbury took game one, 8-0, and the finale, 11-0. Old Westbury (14-12) improves to 4-6 in conference play while Purchase (3-18) dropped to 2-12.
Game One: Old Westbury 8, Purchase 0 (5 Inn.)
Alyssa Clancy fired 4.1 innings of no-hit ball before Cassandra Armstrong tallied Purchase's lone hit of the game on a bunt single. Clancy recorded four strikeouts and improved to 13-11 on the season. The Panthers offense took care of the rest, scoring eight runs on 10 hits, including two homers and two doubles.
Jacqui Alvarado's RBI single got the scoring going in the first inning, plating home
Corrine Protasiewicz for an early 1-0 lead.
In the second,
Jessica Colucci knocked in
Jennifer Jean on an RBI groundout to double Old Westbury's advantage.
Jean belted her third homer of the season in the fourth and
Samantha Howley doubled home Colucci to increase Old Westbury's lead to four.
Old Westbury scored four more runs in the fifth to earn the run rule victory.
Alex Heaney scored Alvarado on a fielder's choice and two batters later, Howley clubbed a three-run homer, her second of the season to close out the scoring.
Howley's (3-3, HR, 4 RBI, R) three-hits and four RBI tied a career-high while Jean (2-3, HR, 3 R, RBI) and Alvarado (2-3, RBI, R) followed with multiple hits to lead Old Westbury's offense.
Nicole Petrucci's bunt single in the fifth extended her hitting streak to a career-best seven games.
Christine Leo (2-8) was saddled with the loss, serving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and one walk.
Game Two: Old Westbury 11, Purchase 0 (5 Inn.)
Clancy (14-11) once again tossed a gem, allowing a first inning single to Tara Stiansen and bounced back to retire her next 14 to post her second consecutive one-hitter, finishing with six strikeouts for her seventh shutout of the season. Clancy helped out her own cause in the first inning with a two-run double to put Old Westbury up for good.
Five more Panthers crossed the plate in the second to increase the lead to seven. Petrucci extended her career-best hitting streak to eight games with an RBI single that scored Heaney.
Jessica Spero followed with a two-run double and Protasiewicz's two-run double capped the scoring in the second.
Alvardo drove in Howley in the third on a fielder's choice to make it an 8-0 game.
Colucci lifted a solo homer to start the fourth inning scoring, her first of her career. Two batters later it was Petrucci's two-run homer that closed out the scoring on an 11 run lead.
Old Westbury held a 12-1 hitting edge in the finale, with the help of multiple hits by Petrucci (3-3, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, SB), Protasiewicz (2-3, 2 RBI, R, 2B) and Colucci (2-3, HR, 2 R, SB). Petrucci and Howely (1-1, 2 BB) each scored three runs.
Purchase's Rebecca Pascarelli (1-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks in two innings.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Thursday (April 18) at 3 p.m. when they host the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles for a 3 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
