www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's lacrosse team wrapped up their inaugural season on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Maritime Privateers in Skyline Conference action at Reinhart Field. The Panthers put forth their best effort, but fell to the Privateers by a final score of 10-8.
The loss closes out the Panthers historical first season with a record of 2-16 overall and 1-9 in conference play, while the Privateers finish their season with an overall mark of 3-11 and 2-8 against the conference.
Anna Noens led the team on the day with a three goal performance, while
JoAnna Kettell followed with a pair of goals for her third multi-goal game of the season.
Sara Braverman set aside 12 shots for the Panthers between the pipes while allowing 10 goals in 60 minutes of action. Braverman's counterpart, Meghin Paczkowski, made five saves while allowing eight goals to lead the Privateers to victory.
The Privateers saw a three goal, one assist performance from Jackie Golematis, followed by multi-goal performances by Charlotte Acklin and Leanne Lavelle.
Maritime broke the scoring ice 3:13 into the contest on an unassisted goal by Golematis. Old Westbury answered back to take a 2-1 lead with 18:08 thanks to goals by Kettell and Noens. Following a Maritime score at 15:19, Noens,
Jordan Schildt and Kettell found the back of the net to give Old Westbury a 5-2 lead with 10:52 showing on the first-half clock. Golematis stopped a 3-0 Panther run with her second goal of the game with 2:07 remaining.
Jessica Walker and the Panthers had the last word in the opening half by scoring with 1:41 left to send Old Westbury into intermission up 6-3.
Gabriella DiPierno opened the second-half scoring just 1:21 into the final stanza for Old Westbury's 7-3 lead on an assisted ball from Schildt. Golematis's third goal of the game with 23:29 left sparked a 3-0 Privateer run. With 12:57 remaining, Kettell assisted Noens on her second-career hat trick to give Old Westbury a two goal cushion. Maritime continued to build momentum on both ends of the field by closing out the final 10:42 on a 4-0 run to slip past Old Westbury. Acklin's goal at the 4:18 mark was the game-winner.
It was a close battle for ground balls, with Maritime leading 26-23. The Privateers also led in shots 29-22 while both team ended the game with 10 draw controls.
Walker won a career-best four draw controls while Schildt followed with three. Schildt also tallied a program record six caused turnovers to go along with a career-best six ground balls.
The inaugural season of Old Westbury women's lacrosse was one filled with highs and lows, but the Panthers can look back with pride and hold their heads high as they secured plenty of program firsts and met a plethora of goals throughout their 2013 campaign. This year's team has laid the foundation for successful seasons to come with high hopes for the 2014 season and beyond.
