OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team hosted the Sage Gators on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference doubleheader from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The Gators double dipped the Panthers, winning 4-1 in the opener and taking the finale, 5-2. The Panthers (9-11) fall to 1-5 in conference play while Sage (9-11) evens out to 2-2.
Game One: Sage 4, Old Westbury 1
Old Westbury jumped ahead in the opener by scoring their lone run of the game in the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead.
Nicole Petrucci reached on a fielding error by third baseman Karlie Williams and three batters later crossed the plate on a Katie Kovage's wild pitch.
Sage answered with four runs on four hits and one error in the third to seal the victory. Kelsey Newberg's one out double drove in Tiffany Bezio and Kristen Beikirch to go up 2-1. Hillary Faas then followed with a two-run homer over the left center fence for a 4-1 lead.
Old Westbury threatened in the seventh when a double by
Jessica Colucci and a Petrucci single with one out brought
Samantha Howley to the plate. Unfortunately, Howley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the comeback attempt.
Colucci's (1-3) double was the lone extra base hit for Old Westbury. Faas (3-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Beikirch (2-4, R) paced Sage with multiple hits as the Gators held an 8-5 hitting edge.
Alyssa Clancy (9-9) was charged with the loss after giving up all four runs on eight hits and one walk in a complete game effort. Kovage (2-1) scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run to pick up the victory.
Game Two: Sage 5, Old Westbury 2
Sage piled on runs in the opening three innings to grab a 4-0 edge. Williams smacked a ground out to first baseman
Jessica Spero that scored Beikirch for the games initial run in the first. Sage answered with two more in the second on a Lauren Cooney RBI single and Beikirch's run scoring double.
Courtney Laughlin singled in the third to score Williams for Sage's fourth run and Beikirch took Clancy deep for a solo home run in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Old Westbury replied in the home half of the sixth with two runs on two hits. With the bases loaded, Clancy delivered a single to score Colucci.
Corrine Protasiewicz followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Petrucci. Sage's Kelsey Newberg then induced a
Jacqui Alvarado groundout to strand two runners.
Old Westbury's offense continued to struggle as Sage outhit the Panthers, 11-3. Beikirch (3-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Rachel Smith (2-4, R) produced multiple hits to lead Sage's offensive attack.
Clancy (9-10) surrendered five runs on 11 hits and two walks to register her 16th complete game outing of the season. Kelsey Newberg (3-5) earned Sage's victory after giving up two runs on three hits and three walks in seven innings of circle work.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT UP FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action when they host the Mount Saint Mary Knights in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday (April 7). First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
