Old Westbury reaches .500 mark with Tuesday’s 17-10 non-conference road win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team picked up a 17-10 non-conference road win Tuesday against the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders from Riverfront Stadium.  Old Westbury evens up at 12-12 on the season while sending Rutgers-Newark to 7-18. 

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first inning and never looked back.  Paul Valerio drew a leadoff walk, stole second and two batters later scored one of his four runs on the day off Jeremy Delgado's single. 

Old Westbury posted six more in the third on three hits and four of Rutgers-Newark's five errors on the day to go up 7-0.  Steve Mare singled to start things off and two batters later scored along with Valerio on a Brian Walsh single for a 3-0 lead.

Rutgers-Newark got on the board in the fourth with a Chris Schultz RBI groundout off starter Frank DiMaria to make it 7-1. 

Old Westbury exploded for eight runs on six hits and one error in the fifth to put the game out of reach, taking a 15-1 lead.  Peter Romeo opened the fifth inning scoring with his second RBI single of the day.  Eddie Hernandez followed by scoring two off a sacrifice fly and RBI singles by Mare and Valerio made it 13-1.  Walsh singled to score two and an RBI double by Jonathan Pagan closed out the fifth inning scoring.  Pagan's double was Old Westbury's lone extra base hit on the day. 

Rutgers-Newark answered with three runs in the fifth to end DiMaria's day.  Rutgers-Newark added a single run in the sixth and five more in the fifth off relievers Christopher Vitale and Tyler LevineMatthew Andress and Stephen Chapter combined to pitch 2.2 shutout innings to close out the game.   

Delgado closed out the scoring in the eighth with a two-run single to cap a 2-for-6 day at the plate with three RBI. 
Steve Mare led all hitters with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including two runs scored and one RBI.  Paul Valerio (2-4, RBI, 4 R, SB), Brian Walsh (2-4, 4 RBI, 2 R), Jonathan Pagan (2-4, RBI, 3 R, SB) and Peter Romeo (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) also produced multiple hits for Old Westbury.  Old Westbury held a 14-13 hitting advantage and stole five bases.   

Rutgers-Newark was led by Ryan Macfarlane (2-4, R, 2B), Michael Murray (2-5, 2 RBI, R), Cameron Dias (2-2, R), and Graham Commesso's (2-3, 2 RBI, R) multi-hit performances. 

Frank DiMaria (3-1) picked up the win by striking out four in five innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks.  Stephen Chapter fanned four over two innings of relief work. 

Rutgers-Newark's starter Michael Garcia was tapped with the loss, surrendering five runs on three hits and four walks in 2.1 innings. 

VASSAR BREWERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 10) at 4 p.m. when they travel to take on the Vassar Brewers in a non-conference battle from Prentiss Baseball Field in Poughkeepsie, New York.
