KINGS POINT, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The second-seeded SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team traveled to take on the No. 7 United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners in the opening round of the ECAC Metro Region Championship Tournament Friday afternoon in Kings Point, New York.  Old Westbury scored first but the Mariners answered with three runs in the second to go up for good en route to a 6-3 victory to eliminate the Panthers.  Old Westbury concludes the season at 25-16-1 while the Mariners (20-16) advance to the semifinal round against the Purchase Panthers on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Valerio set the table with a leadoff single in the first inning.  Valerio then stole second and advanced over to third on a Brian Walsh single.  After Walsh swept second, John Angelino delivered home Valerio on a sacrifice fly to break the scoring ice for a 1-0 lead.

The Mariners answered in the top of the second with three runs to jump ahead, 3-1.  Danny Collins drew a walk off Old Westbury starter Arismendy Nunez to open the frame.  Two batters later, Quinn Fleming singled to advance Collins over the third and then scored off a Hunter Titus single.  Nunez plunked Nicholas Nalette to load the bases for Keil Silva, who drove in two runs on a single to grab the lead.

Peter Romeo reached on a walk and stole second to open the Panthers fifth.  Brandon Stein's infield ground out moved Romeo over to third and a Steve Mare single scored Romeo to make it a 3-2 game.
USMMA responded in the sixth with two runs.  Back-to-back doubles to open the inning started the scoring and a single by Nalette extended the lead to three.

In the bottom of the sixth, Old Westbury made it a 5-3 game on a Romeo sacrifice fly that pushed across Angelino for the single run.

USMMA doubled their advantage in the seventh on a throwing error by first baseman Angelino that allowed Collins to score from third after advancing on Fleming's infield single.

Valerio (2-2, R, 2 SB, BB) and Walsh (2-4, 2B, SB) combined to hit four of Old Westbury's six hits on the day.

Fleming (3-5, 2 R) and Titus (3-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) banged out six of the Mariners' 12 hits while Grant Foley contributed a 2-for-4 game at the plate.

Nunez (6-5) fanned six and took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings of work.  Alex DiSanto stretched his scoreless innings streak to 16.1 innings after tossing two clean frames in relief.

Kyle Clausen (5-3) working six innings to earn the win before Jake Martin recorded five strikeouts over the final three frames to register his first save of the season
