OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team conceded their first conference defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Mount Saint Mary Knights by the score of 5-1.

The Panthers found themselves in a hole early, allowing two goals in the match's first 15 minutes. The Knights' Rob Thompson finished off a free-kick cross in the 11th minute before Brett Fucheck doubled the Mount Saint Mary's lead in the 15th minute, when he too finished an in-swung ball from outside the box.

Old Westbury forward Adan Cruz-Velasquez fired his side back into the game, when he broke free of the defense before making a crafty move around the surging Mount Saint Mary's keeper Matt Darling in the 30th minute for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

But the Panthers couldn't carry the one goal deficit into the second half. Substitute Matt Garcia entered the game late in the first half and headed in a left-side cross to restore the Knights' two-goal lead, which Mount Saint Mary carried into the second half. It was the junior's 11th goal of the season, which is tops in the conference.

The Knights added two more tallies in the second half, courtesy of Brandon Mincher and Sean Lockwood, in the 61st and 85th minutes, respectively. The four-goal lead would prove to be insurmountable for Old Westbury.

The Panthers started senior goalkeeper Marcelo Guardado, who made four saves in his 19th career start. Back-up keeper Peter Sicardi was a late game substitution and was forced to make just one save.

Top performers for the Panthers were midfielder Anthony Ippolito and forward Kosi Ikwuazom, who did well to hold the ball and create in the final third.

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will return to Skyline Conference play on Tuesday (Oct. 1) when they visit Sage  Gators. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Colonie High School.
