@OW_Panthers Men's Basketball collides with John Jay at NYU Tip-Off Tournament

Old Westbury remains on the road for Thursday’s showdown at Division-I Wagner



MANHATTAN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team fell 76-67 to the John Jay Bloodhounds Sunday evening in the consolation game of NYU's Tip-Off Tournament from Jerome S. Coles Center in Manhattan, New York.  With the loss, Old Westbury moves to 0-2 on the young season, while John Jay evened up at 1-1.

Both teams played evenly through the opening 10 minutes, trading basks to combine to for six lead changes.  With the game knotted at 17-all, John Jay created separation by using a 13-4 run from 9:59 to 3:15 to grab a nine-point lead (30-21).  During that span, Old Westbury made seven of its 14 first-half turnovers.  Moments later, Darell Robinson connected on a three-pointer in the closing seconds to extend John Jay's lead to 11 points, making it a 37-26 game at the half.   Old Westbury outshot John Jay from the floor in the opening half, 45.5 percent (10-22) to 39.4 percent (13-33), despite misfiring on 11.1 percent from three-point range (1-9) and 41.7 percent from the free-throw line (5-12).  John Jay held a 21-17 rebounding edge and nabbed 11 steals to Old Westbury's seven.  

John Jay's lead blossomed to as many as 16 points during the final 20 minutes.  Old Westbury closed out the game with a 17-11 run over the final 3:26 while slicing the deficit to eight points (71-63) with 26 seconds remaining. 

Mark Gjonlekaj was the lone Panther to score in double-digits, pouring in 12 points (5-10 FG) to go along with four blocks and one steal in 22 minutes off the bench.  Justin Mize and Cory Alexander both followed with eight points.  Kaleem Edwards added five points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals while Omari Trebuse chipped in with seven points, four assists and two steals.  Jaquan Potter contributed seven points and four steals. 

Robinson paced John Jay with a game-high 25 points (8-12 FG, 5-8 3FG) to go with five assists and three steals.  Korede Griffith followed with 12 points and six steals wile Kendal Jordan notched 11 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 47.4 percent from the field (27-57), 15.8 percent from three point territory (3-19) and 50 percent from the free throw line (10-20) while John Jay hit 39.7 percent from the floor (25-63), 37.5 percent from beyond the arc (9-24) and 60.7 percent from the charity stripe (17-28).  Old Westbury totaled eight blocked shots while John Jay won the boards battle, 45-33, and finished with 16 steals compared to Old Westbury's 14.  John Jay scored 20 points off 24 Panther turnovers while Old Westbury converted 25 Bloodhound miscues into 13 points.
