@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball locks down 88-33 season opening win over Medgar Evers

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team opened its 2014-15 campaign with an impressive 88-33 non-conference victory against the visiting Medgar Evers Cougars on Monday evening from Clark Athletic Center.

Chloe Mellon dropped in a layup 21 seconds into the season to score Old Westbury's (1-0) first points of the campaign.  Jade Venson hit a jumper for Medgar Evers (0-1) at 19:07 to knot the game at 2-2.  Jasmine Robinson's layup sparked a 26-2 Panther run from 18:33 to 8:19 to jump in front, 28-4.  Old Westbury closed out the opening half with a 17-7 run over the final 8:04 to take a 45-12 advantage into the break. 

Old Westbury continued its dominance, outscoring Medgar Evers 43-21 in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.  Old Westbury used a 15-2 run from 12:06 to 6:15 to take a 48 point lead (73-25).  Crystal Barnes knocked down a jumper with 1:10 remaining to close out the scoring books, extending Old Westbury's lead to 55 points for an 88-33 final. 

The 55-point win was Old Westbury's largest margin of victory since defeating Vaughn College by 67 points (75-8) at home on January 28, 2012. 

All 13 Panthers scored as Robinson finished with a game-high 20 points (6-12 FG, 2-3 3FG) and career-high nine steals to go along with four assists and four rebounds.  Clarissa Gallagher followed with 14 points (5-11 FG, 3-6 3FG), five rebounds and three steals while Raven Pentz added 10 points, five assists (game-high) and five rebounds.  Barnes added 10 points (5-8 FG) and nine rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.  Olivia Ilardi poured in 10 points and Kendra Jordan chipped in with three steals. 

Ashley Desir led the way for Medgar Evers with 14 points and Venson followed with 11. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 40 percent from the field (30-75), 38.1 percent from three point territory (8-21) and 57.1 percent from the free-throw line (20-35) while Medgar Evers hit 22 percent from the floor (9-41), 0-for-3 from beyond the arc and 55.6 percent from the charity stripe (15-27).  Old Westbury totaled 21 steals and won the boards battle, 49-42.  Old Westbury scored 41 points off 36 Medgar Evers miscues and tallied 20 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.    


HUNTER HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Friday (Nov. 21) for a non-conference tilt against the Hunter Hawks at 5 p.m. in the opening game of the Hawks Tip-Off Tournament from Hunter College Sportsplex.
