@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball battles Hunter at Hawks Tip-Off Tournament

Old Westbury will square-off against Eastern on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the consolation game of the Hawks Tip-Off Tournament

MANHATTAN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team were unable to overcome a nine-point first-half deficit as the Hunter Hawks topped the Panthers, 70-63, on Friday evening in the opening round of the Hawks Tip-Off Tournament from Hunter College Sportsplex.  Old Westbury (1-1) will now face the Eastern Eagles (2-1) in Saturday's 1 p.m. consolation game in Manhattan.

Old Westbury jumped ahead early with Crystal Barnes' jumper followed by a triple by Clarissa Gallagher to give the Panthers a 5-0 advantage with 17:36 remaining.  Hunter answered to take the lead for good with a 27-10 run from 15:15 to 3:24 for a 12-point cushion (29-17).  Hunter took a 32-23 edge into the break.

Old Westbury chipped away at the deficit to start the second half with an 8-3 run to make it a 35-31 game.  Kristen Markoe then sparked a 17-5 Hunter run from 17:29 to 11:50 to give the home team a 52-36 lead.  Old Westbury trimmed the deficit to two points with a 14-1 run from 10:02 to 5:58.  Old Westbury kept it close in the final minutes as Raven Pentz dropped in a layup with 36 seconds remaining to make it a 65-63 game.  Hunter was able to convert 5-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 25 seconds to secure a 70-63 victory.

Gallagher (7-13 FG, 3-5 3FG) poured in a team-high 17 points to go along with a career-high two blocked shots.  Raven Pentz followed with 10 points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals (career-high) while Nikki Alexander contributed eight points, nine rebounds, one block and one steal off the bench.  Crystal Barnes added six points, 10 rebounds and one blocked shot.

Markoe and Joey Chan each led Hunter with 20 points.  Markoe also registered 14 rebounds and 11 assists to recorded a triple-double in 40 minutes of action.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 37.7 percent from the field (26-69), 46.7 percent from three-point territory (7-15) and 44.4 percent from the free-throw line (4-9) while Hunter knocked down 31.1 percent from the floor (23-74), 23.1 percent from beyond the arc (3-13) and 65.6 percent from the charity stripe (21-32).  Hunter won the boards battle, 56-48, and also held a 19-12 advantage in assists.  Old Westbury rejected five shots and nabbed nine steals while Hunter converted 24 Panther turnovers into 17 points.  Old Westbury limited Hunter to just six second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds and pressured the Hawks into 15 miscues.
