OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team battled from behind the entire game in its home opener Tuesday evening, falling 76-59 to the visiting Alvernia Crusaders in non-conference action.  The loss moves Old Westbury to 0-4 on the young season while Alvernia improved to 3-2.

Alvernia set the tone early as Charles Cooper broke the scoring ice with one of his six three-pointers on the game to grab the lead.  Down 5-0, Old Westbury tied the game with a bucket by Luckens Victor and a three ball by Omari Trebuse with 16:58 showing on the first-half clock.  Alvernia would then knock down six of its next eight shots, using a 15-2 run from 16:42 to 12:20 to take a 20-7 lead.  Moments later, Alvernia's lead blossomed to 17 points before Old Westbury responeded with a 9-2 run over the final 3:56 to head into the half down 40-30.

Old Westbury put together a 9-4 run over the opening 15:09 to pull within five points, making it a 44-39 game.  Old Westbury kept the game close until Alvernia used a 13-0 run from 8:01 to 3:43 for a 64-46 lead.  During that stretch, Old Westbury shot 0-for-9 from the field with five turnovers as Alvernia put the game out of reach.

Jaquan Potter netted career-highs of 17 points (6-11 FG) and two blocked shots to lead Old Westbury.  Dom Bostick followed with eight points and eight rebounds (four offensive) while Mark Gjonlekaj added seven points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench.

Cooper led all scorers with 32 points (6-8 3FG, 10-11 FT) in addition to swiping away four steals to pace Alvernia.  Harrison Deyo contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots while Mike Miller chipped in with 13 points off the bench.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 38.3 percent from the field (23-60), 36.8 percent from three-point territory (7-19) and 50 percent from the free-throw line (6-12) while Alvernia shot 36.5 percent from the floor (19-52), 38.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-21) and 76.9 percent from the charity stripe (30-39).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 42-36, and also held the advantage in assists (14-10) and blocked shots (8-3) while Alvernia nabbed 13 steals to the Panthers' one.  Alvernia converted 20 Panther turnovers into 25 points as Old Westbury limited Alvernia to nine second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.
