Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play on Thursday at Yeshiva

BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team lost a hard-fought non-conference road battle Tuesday evening, falling to the Brooklyn Bulldogs, 90-80, from West Quad Center in Brooklyn, New York.  Old Westbury now stands at 0-5 on the season heading into Thursday's Skyline Conference opener at Yeshiva, while Brooklyn improved to 6-1.

Brooklyn's Valon Djombalic dropped in a layup just 15 seconds into play to set the tone for the Bulldogs' wire-to-wire victory.  Down 7-2, Mark Gjonlekaj dialed in from three-point range for Old Westbury to make it a two-point game with three of his 14 first-half points.  After Justin Mize sank a pair of free throws to make it a 19-17 game with 9:31, Brooklyn answered with a 17-7 run from 9:22 to 3:53 to go up 12 (36-24).  Gjonlekaj responded with six unanswered points to make it 36-30 with 1:59 left.  Bradley Eugene's layup kept it close for Old Westbury in the closing seconds to make it a 40-34 game heading into the half.

Down by five early in the second half, Omari Trebuse connected on one of his four triples to make it a two-point game (42-40) with 18:21 remaining.  Brooklyn then extended its lead with a quick 8-0 spurt from 18:03 to 16:13 for a 50-40 advantage.  Eugene again answered with a layup to slice Old Westbury's deficit to eight points at 16:13.   Brooklyn would then score seven-unanswered points to make it a 15-point game with 12:08 showing on the second-half clock.  Old Westbury's deficit grew to as many as 16 points on three occasions before closing out the final 23 seconds with an 8-2 run before time expired.

Jaquan Potter led the Panthers with a career-high 19 points, sinking a career-best 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, to go along with one steal.  Gjonlekaj followed with his first-career double-double, scoring 16 points (5-9 FG) and grabbing a career-best 11 rebounds while nabbing one steal.  Trebuse added 16 points (4-7 3FG) and a season-high five assists.  Stephon Odle tied a career-high with nine points off the bench before fouling out with five seconds remaining.

Jai Kellman's game-high 24 points led three other Bulldogs in double-digit scoring.  Djombalic and Egzon Gjonbalaj each scored 13 points while Lorenzo Williams added 12.  Gjonbalaj also pulled-down 10 rebounds and Djombalic chipped in with nine.  Williams swept after four steals and Jamel Gist dished out a game-high seven assists.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 40.9 percent from the field (27-66), 42.9 percent from three-point territory (12-28) and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line (14-19) while Brooklyn knocked down 36.8 percent from the floor (25-68), 20.8 percent from beyond the arc (5-24) and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe (35-56).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 50-48, scoring 12 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury edged Brooklyn in assists (16-13), while the Bulldogs held the advantage in steals (15-3) and blocks (6-1).  Brooklyn netted 30 points off 22 Panther miscues as Old Westbury forced the Bulldogs into eight turnovers, resulting in seven points.
