@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball, Medgar Evers set to meet in Sunday’s third-place game

Old Westbury and Medgar Evers battle in Sunday’s third-place game of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament in Brooklyn, New York


BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team opened the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers College against the New Rochelle Blue Angels on Saturday evening with a 78-72 setback from Cougars Cave.  The Blue Angels (4-1) advance to the championship game to face the Yeshiva Maccabees (1-4), while Old Westbury (1-3) will take on the host Cougars (0-5) in Sunday's consolation game at 1 p.m. in Brooklyn, New York.  Old Westbury opened the season November 17 with an 88-33 win at home over Medgar Evers. 
Both teams traded points to open the first half before Old Westbury grabbed a seven-point lead (11-4) off a 10-2 run from 19:01 to 14:53.  With Old Westbury clinging to a one-point lead, New Rochelle answered with a 12-3 spurt from 10:38 to 6:02 for a 28-18 lead.  New Rochelle built its lead to as many as 11 (39-28) in the opening half and took a 39-30 advantage into the break.      

The Blue Angels picked up right where they left off, building a game-high 14 point lead  (55-41) as Hannah Cambel connected on four triples to extend New Rochelle's cushion.  Forced to make a move, Old Westbury netted nine unanswered points to cut the deficit to five, trailing the Blue Angels, 55-50.  The Panthers continued to push as a Chloe Mellon layup gave Old Westbury a brief 60-59 with 4:50 remaining.  Ruth Vargas would later tie the game at 62-all for Old Westbury before Jah-Leah Ellis dropped in two of her 17 second-half points to put New Rochelle up for good.  New Rochelle created separation by outscoring Old Westbury 16-10 over the final 3:44 to secure a spot in Sunday's championship game.     

Jasmine Robinson was hampered by foul trouble all game, eventually fouling out with fourteen seconds to go.  She finished with a team-best 15 points to go along with four assists and one steal.  Crystal Barnes followed with her first-career double-double, registering a career-high 14 points, 10 rebounds (six offensive), three blocks (career-high) and one steal.  Raven Pentz added nine points, seven assists (season-high), six rebounds and three steals while Olivia Ilardi chipped in with 10 points and a career-high three steals.  Clarissa Gallagher contributed six rebounds, four steals (season-high) and four assists.  Kendra Jordan totaled seven rebounds (career-high) and two steals off the bench. 

Ellis and Cambel each led New Rochelle with 25 points, while Ellis finished with a final line of 27 rebounds (13 offensive), eight assists and three steals.  Alyssa Pechin added 12 points and seven assists.    

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 34.9 percent from the field (29-83), 15 percent from three-point territory (3-20) and 57.9 percent from the free-throw line (11-19) while New Rochelle knocked down 35.4 percent from the floor (28-79), 38.5 percent from beyond the arc (10-26) and 60 percent from the charity stripe (12-20).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 61-52, scoring 22 second-chance points off 25 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in steals (14-6) and blocks (4-3) while New Rochelle dished out 25 assists, compared to Old Westbury's season-best effort of 21 helpers.  New Rochelle netted 17 points off 21 Panther miscues as Old Westbury forced the Blue Angels into 17 turnovers, resulting in 15 points.
