@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball coasts past Medgar Evers, 94-35

Old Westbury claims third place with Sunday’s win at the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament


BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team claimed third place at the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament with a 94-35 victory over the host  Medgar Evers Cougars on Sunday from Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, New York.  With the win, Old Westbury improved to 2-3 on the season while sending the Cougars' record to 0-6.  Crystal Barnes was named to the all-tournament team after registering 31 points (15-23 FG), 21 rebounds, six blocks and one steal in two games over the weekend.   
 
Both teams got off to a rocky start, combining to miss their first 11 shots from the field before Barnes sank a jumper at 16:22 to put the Panthers ahead, 4-1.  Barnes' jumper sparked a 22-0 run from 16:22 to 9:54, which put Old Westbury on top with a 23-point lead (24-1).  Old Westbury used a 13-4 run over the final 3:46 to take a 49-17 lead into the half.    
 
Old Westbury opened the second half with a 21-6 run for a 47-point advantage (70-23) with 9:31 remaining.  Old Westbury's lead twice maxed out at 59 points as the Panthers outscored Medgar Evers 45-18 over the final 20 minutes. 
 
Barnes and Jasmine Robinson each poured in 17 points to lead the way for Old Westbury.  Barnes sank 8-of-13 from the field to register her career-best scoring output, while pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking three shots for her second-straight double-double.  Robinson also added six steals while Clarissa Gallagher scored 14 points.  Bridgid McNeill contributed career-highs of 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals off the bench.  Kendra Jordan chipped in with three steals. 
 
Nia Tompkins paced Medgar Evers with 15 points, hitting on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. 
 
In the end, Old Westbury connected on 40.7 percent from the field (35-86), 27.3 percent from three-point territory (6-22) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (18-27) while Medgar Evers knocked down 25.5 percent from the floor (12-47), 40 percent from beyond the arc (4-10) and 46.7 percent from the charity stripe (7-15).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 54-39, scoring 18 second-chance points off 27 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in steals (18-6), blocks (6-2) and assists (21-3).  Old Westbury netted 44 points off 37 Cougar miscues as Medgar Evers forced the Panthers into a season-low 11 turnovers, resulting in seven points.


YORK CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Wednesday (Dec. 3) for a non-conference battle against the visiting York Cardinals at 6 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, New York.
