Barnes’ double-double leads @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball at home against New Rochelle

Crystal Barnes racked up a career-high 21 points to post her fifth-straight double-double

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury lost on a heart-breaking buzzer beater as the visiting New Rochelle Blue Angels escaped the Clark Athletic Center with a 71-70 non-conference victory.  With the loss, Old Westbury moves to 4-4 on the season, while New Rochelle climbed to 6-4.

Both teams battled throughout the game, which featured 14 lead changes and 14 ties.  Ruth Vargas dropped in a layup with 14:25 remaining in the opening half to give Old Westbury a 9-7 lead.  New Rochelle answered with a 14-5 run from 13:28 to 7:18 for a seven-point lead (21-14).  New Rochelle's largest lead would also max out at seven points with 3:57 and 1:30 remaining.  Old Westbury's Crystal Barnes closed out the scoring in the first-half with a jumper at the 1:09 mark to send New Rochelle into the break with a 33-28 lead. 

Old Westbury outscored New Rochelle 42-38 in an evenly played second half, which saw a combined 18 turnovers between the two teams.  Barnes banked in a layup to spark Old Westbury's 10-3 run over the opening 5:06 of the half to give the Panthers a 40-36 lead.  With the game tied at 59, Raven Pentz connected on a three pointer to put Old Westbury ahead by three with 4:21 remaining.  Nikki Alexander drained a pair of free throws with 3:22 left for a five-point (64-59) Old Westbury advantage.  New Rochelle outscored Old Westbury 12-6 over the final 3:02, which included Jah-Leah Ellis converting on 7-of-9 from the free-throw line during that stretch.  Pentz scored Old Westbury's final points off a pair of free throws with 52 seconds remaining for a 70-66 lead.  Old Westbury proceeded to commit three costly turnovers during the final 29 seconds to contribute to the loss which ended its three-game winning streak.  Ellis hit a free throw with 27 seconds left to bring the Blue Angels within one point, 70-69.  Following a missed three-point attempt by Alyssa  Pechin, Caitlin Harrison corralled the offensive rebound and drained the game winner as time expired to lift the Blue Angles past Old Westbury. 

Barnes scored 15 of her career-high 21 points (8-10 FG) in the second half and finished with 12 rebounds to register her fifth straight double-double.  Barnes also added three steals (tied career-high) and two blocks, while Chloe Mellon chipped in with a game-high three rejections.  Clarissa Gallagher scored 11 points while Pentz and Jasmine Robinson each netted nine points.  Robinson dished out a season-best five assists before fouling out with 27 seconds left. 

Ellis led all scorers with 30 points (9-25 FG, 2-3 3FG, 10-18 FT) to go along with 11 rebounds (seven offensive), four assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action.  Pechin followed with 14 points (4-7 3FG), seven assists (game-high) and five rebounds while Ja'Nasha King contributed eight points, five assists and four steals.  Kevona Jackson helped out with 10 points off the bench.

In the end, Old Westbury shot a season-best 47.2 percent from the field (25-53) and 72.2 percent from the free-throw line (13-18) while landing 38.9 percent from three-point range (7-18).  New Rochelle connected on 37.3 percent from the floor (25-67), 50 percent from beyond the arc (8-16) and 54.2 percent from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 41-38, scoring 21 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also rejected six shots, compared to just one by New Rochelle.  New Rochelle held the advantage in assists (18-17) and steals (10-6) while converting 25 Panther turnovers into 26 points as Old Westbury scored 23 points off 18 Blue Angel miscues.     


SAINT ELIZABETH SCREAMING EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 14) for a non-conference road battle against the Saint Elizabeth Screaming Eagles at 1 p.m. from St. Joseph's Gymnasium in Morristown, New Jersey.
