@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball cruises past Saint Elizabeth, 87-72

Old Westbury improved to 5-4 on the season with Sunday’s non-conference road win


MORRISTOWN, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team improved to 5-4 on the season with Sunday's 87-72 non-conference road victory against the Saint Elizabeth Screaming Eagles (3-3) from St. Joseph's Gymnasium.   

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice with back-to-back jumpers by Olivia Ilardi and Jasmine Robinson to jump out to an early 4-0 lead 1:07 into play.  Saint Elizabeth then scored the next six points to take their lone lead of the game (6-4) with 17:27 remaining.  Robinson responded with a jumper to tie the game (6-6) before Bridgid McNeill's jumper put Old Westbury up for good (8-6) with 14:59 showing on the first-half clock.  Robinson later connected on a three ball to spark an 18-1 Panther run from 14:13 to 7:41 to build up a 28-7 lead.  Saint Elizabeth closed the deficit to eight points (30-22) with 3:31 remaining before Old Westbury took a 46-30 lead into the half off a 14-6 run over the final 2:13.  Old Westbury extended its lead to a game-high 19 points off a Clarissa Gallagher three pointer with eight seconds remaining.     

Saint Elizabeth outscored the Panthers 42-41 over the final 20 minutes, which saw the Screaming Eagles trim the deficit to three points (73-70) with 3:51 remaining.  However, Old Westbury rallied over the final 3:21 with a 14-2 spurt to cruise to a 15-point victory. 

Old Westbury saw three players reach double-digit points, led by Robinson's career-high 28 points (10-21 FG).  Robinson also registered seven steals and five assists.  Raven Pentz followed with 16 points, eight assists and two steals while Gallagher added 13 points, five rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.  Crystal Barnes' five-game double-double streak came to an end despite contributing nine points, 14 rebounds (tied career-high), three blocks and two steals to the victory.  Ruth Vargas chipped in with nine rebounds and two blocks off the bench. 

Sharolin Sanders and Christine Grispart each scored 17 points to lead Saint Elizabeth.  Ashley Pledger and Alexandria Garcia rounded out the Screaming Eagles' double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 36.3 percent from the field (29-80), 32.1 percent from three-point range (9-28) and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line (20-28) while Saint Elizabeth hit 46.4 percent from the floor (26-56), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (5-15) and 53.6 percent from the charity stripe (15-28).  Old Westbury also won the boards battle, 57-43, scoring 17 second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury finished the game with the edge in steals (16-6), blocks (8-0) and assists (22-21) while converting 24 Saint Elizabeth turnovers in 34 points.  


CENTENARY CYCLONES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will close out the 2014 calendar year at home on Saturday (Dec. 20) with a non-conference  battle against the Centenary Cyclones at 12 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
