Alexander’s 13 points pace @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball against St. John Fisher

Old Westbury set to close out the 2014 calendar year on Tuesday against the Utica Pioneers in Rochester, New York


ROCHESTER, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team took the court Monday evening at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament against the host St. John Fisher Cardinals from Bobby Wanzer Court in Rochester, New York.  Old Westbury (0-8) got off the a slow start to fall 67-37 to the Cardinals (6-2) and will now  close out the 2014 calendar year against the Utica Pioneers (3-5) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. from St. John Fisher College.

The Panthers started slow, misfiring on its first-nine shots to fall behind 12-0 in the early going.  Cory Alexander sparked Old Westbury off the bench with eight first-half points, including a three pointer with 13:26 remaining to put the Panthers on the board.  Old Westbury continued to struggle shooting the ball, hitting on just 12.1 percent from the field (4-33) in the opening half.  Alexander dropped in a layup with 7:47 left to score Old Westbury's final points of the half as the Panthers missed on its final 13 shot attempts over the remaining 6:39.  St. John Fisher capitalized with a 10-0 run over the final 7:26 to take a 29-10 advantage into the half.

Alexander connected on a jumper to score the first points of the second half, making it a 29-12 game with 19:42 showing on the clock.  Moments later, Alexander drilled a three pointer to close to gap to 13 points (29-16) with 16:25 remaining.  The Panthers held St. John Fisher off the second-half scoreboard until Keegan Ryan's layup put the Cardinals back up by 15 with 16:09 left.  The Cardinals then took a 20-point lead (38-18) off Tyler Hart's triple with 13 minutes to go in regulation.  St. John Fisher finished the game with a 30-point margin, its largest lead of the game.        

Alexander led the Panthers with a career-high 13 points (3-8 3FG) and five rebounds.  Jaquan Potter followed with nine rebounds and four steals while Reynaldo Walters tallied eight points and two steals in his debut.  Kaleem Edwards chipped in with five rebounds and two blocked shots as Omari Trebuse nabbed three steals. 

Ryan's game-high 21 points (7-13 FG) and 18 rebounds paced the Cardinals. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 21.9 percent from the field (14-64), 20 percent from three-point territory (5-25) and 40 percent from the free-throw line (4-10) while St. John Fisher knocked down 44.2 percent from the floor (23-52), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (7-21) and 56 percent from the charity stripe (14-25).  Old Westbury had the edge in steals (11-6) and offensive rebounds (20-17) while the Cardinals won the boards battle, 51-42, and also held the advantage in blocked shots (8-6) and assists (16-8).
