Vaughan’s career day leads @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball against Utica

Nat Vaughan scored a career-high 16 points to close out the 2014 portion of Old Westbury’s schedule


ROCHESTER, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team concluded its 2014 portion of the schedule on Tuesday afternoon with an 85-64 setback to the Utica Pioneers from day two of St. John Fisher's Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament in Rochester, New York. 

Down 8-1 early on, Old Westbury (0-9) roared back to make it at one-point game (10-9) as Stephon Odle scored eight-straight points for the Panthers.  Utica (4-5) responded with a 17-4 run from 14:30 to 7:16 to take a commanding 27-13 advantage.  Old Westbury closed the gap to 11 points off Cory Alexander's triple with 5:43 remaining.  Utica would close out the final 5:11 with a 12-4 run to go into the half up 41-22. 

Utica picked up right where they left off, using a 14-5 run from 18:14 to 13:43 to jump out to a 26-point lead.  Old Westbury trailed by a game-high 32 points (75-43) with 4:53 showing on the second-half clock before using a late 17-4 surge to trim the deficit to 19 points with 47 second remaining.  Utica went back up by 24 points in the closing seconds and settled for a 21-point victory when time expired. 

Nat Vaughan scored 10 of his career-best 16 points (7-11 FG) in the second half to lead the Panthers.  Odle recorded a career-high 13 points (5-13 FG) to go along with five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.  Alexander contributed nine points off the bench and Luckens Victor added seven.

Conor Maisch's game-high 27 points (7-11 FG, 6-10 3FG) led three other Pioneers in double-digit scoring.  Aaron Nevins dealt out seven assists as Maisch added seven rebounds and two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 41 percent from the field (25-61), 26.7 percent from three-point territory (8-30) and 60 percent from the free-throw line (6-10) while Utica connected on 58.3 percent from the floor (28-48), 52.6 percent from beyond the arc (10-19) and 59.4 percent from the charity stripe (19-32).  Utica won the boards battle, 41-32, scoring nine second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.  Utica scored 19 points off 15 Panther turnovers while also holding the advantage in assists (17-8) and steals (7-4).  


SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court next on Saturday (Jan. 3) at home for a Skyline Conference battle against the Sage Gators at 2 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, New York.
