Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team opened the 2015 calendar year with a convincing 97-93 Skyline Conference win in overtime against the Sage Gators on Saturday afternoon from Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (1-9) improves to 1-2 in conference play while sending Sage's (6-2) league record to 2-1.

In what was a tightly contested opening half, both teams combined for five lead changes.  Old Westbury would take its first lead (18-17) with 10:42 remaining off a triple by Omari Trebuse.  Then at 10:23, Jaquan Potter connected on a three pointer of his own to cap an 8-3 Panther run to make it a 21-20 game.  Moments later, Reynaldo Walters dropped in two of his seven first-half points to put the Panthers up 25-24 with 8:27 remaining.  Old Westbury held the lead over the final 8:27 of the first half, using a key 8-2 run from 8:41 to 6:17 to build a 29-26 lead.  Old Westbury later extended its lead to four before taking a 39-36 lead into the break.

Sage opened the second half with three-straight triples as part of a 9-2 run to take a 45-41 lead with 18:30 remaining in regulation.  Sage extended its lead to 54-48 before Walters' layup at 12:36 sparked a 20-6 Panther run over the next 5:44 to go up 68-60.  Moments later, Old Westbury's lead blossomed to nine points as Walters dropped in two more points for a 75-66 advantage.  Sage responded with a 12-4 run from 4:33 to 1:40 to slice the deficit to one point, making it a 79-78 game.  With 38 seconds left, Kaleem Edwards banked in a layup for an 84-80 Old Westbury lead.  Sage would later tie the game at 86 with Marcus Patterson's four-point play with 14 seconds left.  Both teams were unable to convert in the closing seconds as the game was sent to overtime.

In the extra frame, Sage grabbed an early 88-86 lead off a pair of made Andre Robinson free throws.  Walters answered with four-straight points to make it a 90-88 game as Old Westbury took the lead for good with 3:40 remaining.  Clinging to a one-point lead, Mark Gjonlekaj converted a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left for a 96-93 Old Westbury advantage.  Dom Bostick sealed the victory with a made free throw with three seconds left for 97-93 final.

In the end, Walters poured in 33 points, the highest Panther total since Tevon McNair scored 34 points against Sage on January 22, 2012.  Walters shot 10-of-19 from the field and 11-of-16 from the free-throw line in addition to tallying four assists, two steals and four rebounds.  Trebuse followed with 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.  Potter went for 14 points, two blocks and one steal while Justin Mize netted a career-high 13 points.  Luckens Victor chipped in with three blocks and Edwards added a team-best nine rebounds.  Mark Gjonlekaj nabbed three steals and scored seven points off the bench.

Melvin Ford and Jorrdan McCray each scored 17 points to lead Sage.  Ford also contributed 22 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.  Kai Deans added 11 points and 11 rebounds while Robinson netted 16 points to go with five steals and five assists.

Old Westbury connected on 42.3 percent from the field (33-78), 31.6 percent from three-point territory (6-19) and 67.6 percent from the free-throw line (25-37) while Sage hit 33.8 percent from the floor (27-80), 38.5 percent from beyond the arc (10-26) and 65.9 percent from the charity stripe (29-44).  Sage won the boards battle, 68-45, scoring 29 second-chance points off 33 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury scored 30 points off 28 Gator turnovers while Sage scored 19 points off 17 Panther miscues.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in assists (20-13), fast break scoring (26-6), points in the paint (44-30) and blocked shots (6-5) while Sage swept away 13 steals, compared to the Panthers' 10.
