FARMINGDALE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team lost a 72-58 Skyline Conference decision to the Farmingdale State Rams Saturday evening from Walter A. Lynch Sports Center. The setback sent Old Westbury (7-17) to 5-8 in conference play while the first place Rams (15-8) improved to 12-1.
Old Westbury nearly led the entire opening half if it wasn't for two brief leads for the Rams. Trailing 2-0 just seven seconds into play, Old Westbury quickly answered with a 6-0 spurt and in total, used a 14-6 run to go up by six with 11:59 remaining.
Olivia Ilardi then dropped in two of her seven first-half points to give Old Westbury a 23-15 advantage at 8:20. Farmingdale State answered with a 9-0 run to take a 24-23 lead with 5:32. Old Westbury took a 36-27 edge into intermission after responding with a 13-3 run to close out the final 4:48. At the end of 20 minutes, Old Westbury shot 41.7 percent from the field compared to the Rams' 23.1 percent in addition to holding a 31-23 rebounding edge.
Farmingdale State stormed out of the second half gates with a 10-0 run to knot the game at 36-all with 17:23 remaining. Both teams combined to total four lead changes over the next 2:51 and a layup by Nicky Young with 14:15 showing on the clock gave Farmingdale State the lead for good. Young sparked a 23-3 run as the Rams held a commanding 64-45 lead with 7:39 remaining, their largest advantage of the game. Old Westbury's 7-0 run sliced the deficit to 64-52 with 5:38 left and in the end it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Old Westbury struggled in the second half, shooting 21.1 percent from the floor while turning the ball over 15 times, which resulted in 16 Ram points.
DeAndra Scott scored a team-high 14 points while
Jasmine Robinson followed with 12 points, four assists, three blocks and two steals.
Chloe Mellon registered a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots.
Young and Camille Romero each scored 16 points to lead the Rams while Andrea Desvignes added 14. Lushanta Savadel ripped recorded team-highs in rebounds (12) and blocks (2).
Old Westbury finished the game shooting 31.1 percent from the field (23-74), 31.3 percent from three-point range (5-16) and 58.3 percent from the free throw line (58.3) as Farmingdale State connected on 29.3 percent from the floor (24-82), 20 percent from beyond the arc (4-20) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (20-28). The Panthers owned a 61-53 rebounding edge, scoring 18 second chance points off 25 offensive rebounds.
SEASON FINALE AGAINST MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Newburgh, New York for a season finale on Sunday (February 23) when they take on the Mount Saint Mary Knights in a Skyline Conference battle. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. inside Kaplan Center.
