NEWBURGH, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball closed out the 2013-14 season with an impressive 73-69 road victory over the Mount Saint Mary Knights Sunday afternoon on senior day inside Kaplan Center. The victory secured a season sweep over the Knights as the Panthers conclude the season with an 8-17 overall record and 6-8 in conference action while sending Mount Saint Mary to 5-20 and 5-9, respectively.
Old Westbury made it a mission to close out the season on a high note as the Panthers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead just 3:40 into play. Moments later,
Nikki Alexander connected on a three pointer to put the Panthers up 23-8 with 12:49 remaining. The Knights attempted to defend its home court with an 11-5 run over the next 4:53 to slice the deficit to nine points. Old Westbury would answer with a 12-4 run which expanded its largest lead of the game to 17 points (44-27). Mount Saint Mary countered with a 9-0 run to close out the final 2:36 of play in the half to head into the break trailing 44-36.
Mount Saint Mary carried its momentum over to the second half and grabbed its first lead of the game off a pair of Nicole Scicutella free throws to make it a 59-58 Knight advantage with 7:15 left. Lauren Romao then delivered a three ball with 6:21 remaining to put the Knights up by four points. Old Westbury regrouped and outplayed Mount Saint Mary over the final 4:53, using a 13-5 run to secure the season ending victory to spoil the Knights' senior day.
DeAndra Scott concluded her four-year career with a dominating performance of 25 points and 16 rebounds to record her 41st career double-double. Scott also added two steals and one blocked shot.
Clarissa Gallagher followed with her second career double-double after registering 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three point range and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Raven Pentz chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and five assists as
Chloe Mellon tallied nine rebounds and three blocks.
Rachel Perrone's 25 points and 14 rebounds paced the Knights. Romao followed with 15 points while Jessica Perrone and Natalie Candarelli each scored 10.
Old Westbury shot 36.9 percent from the field (24-65), a season-best 57.1 percent from three point territory (8-14) and 54.8 percent from the free throw line (17-31) as Mount Saint Mary hit 33.3 percent from the floor (24-72), 25 percent from beyond the arc (4-16) and 89.5 percent from the charity stripe (17-19). Old Westbury won the boards battle, 49-47, while the Knights scored 17 second chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.
