TROY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team got off the strong starts in each half but were unable to rebound from multiple runs as the Sage Gators earned an 86-60 Skyline Conference victory on Saturday afternoon in Troy, New York. The loss sent the Panthers (5-15) to 3-6 in conference play while Sage (13-7) improved to 8-2.
Clarissa Gallagher dialed in from long distance to score the first points as the Panthers took an early 3-0 lead. Moments later,
Chloe Mellon sank a jumper to give Old Westbury its largest lead of the game, 6-2, with 17:19 remaining in first half action. Sage replied with 15-1 run from 16:59 to 11:11 to go up 10 points before
DeAndra Scott cut in down to single digits by dropped in a layup for two of her eight first half points. Mellon would follow with a layup to make it a six point game before Sage used a 21-6 run from 10:02 to 2:34 to make it a 21 point game before taking a 43-24 lead into the half.
Old Westbury once again got off the a fast start in the second half, attacking the basketball early on with a layup by Scott and
Olivia Ilardi's three-point play to make it a 43-29 game. Sage answered with a 9-0 run to go back up by 20 and then took its largest lead of the game with a 28 point advantage, 66-38, off a 14-7 run from 16:26 to 10:06.
Scott led the Panthers in scoring for the 18th game this season, finishing with 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting as the team finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from the field (20-56 FG) compared to Sage's 41.2 percent (35-85 FG). Scott recorded a team-high six turnovers as Old Westbury registered 20 as a team while tying a season-low with just eight assists. Ilardi was called into the starting lineup for the first time in her career and responded by scoring a career-best 13 points (4-7 FG) in 21 minutes of action. Gallagher followed with 11 points, knocking down three of Old Westbury's six three-pointers on the day. Mellon added a career-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Megan Bowman led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 12 assists and six steals while Sara Tironi (18), Chelsea Martin (12) and Frankie Pearson (11) scored in double figures. Amie Jefferson contributed a game-high 14 rebounds as the Gators won the boards battle, 52-37, scoring 22 second chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.
