HILLBURN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's lacrosse team put up a valiant effort in their sophomore season opener, but came up short, 11-5, in a hard-fought road contest with the Ramapo Roadrunners on Saturday morning from Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, New York.

The Panthers stayed within reach of the Roadrunners for most of the game until Ramapo finished the final two goals to pull away late.

The Panthers were led by Courtney Gallagher eighth career multi-goal game, while Meaghan Haber, Nicole Giambrone and Sara Bey each added single goals.  Jordan Schildt tallied two draw controls while Bey and Maria Dischley each scooped up three ground balls to pace Old Westbury.  Dischley and Caitlin Thomas both caused two turnovers.  Jackie Cartagena recorded eight saves.

The Panthers fell behind early as Lindsay Hughes sent three goals to the back of the net in the opening 10:31 to put the Roadrunners up 3-0.  Down 4-0, Haber netted Old Westbury's first goal of the season at 17:15 for her first career score.  Haber's goal sparked a 3-0 Panther run as Giambrone (10:32) and Gallagher (4:42) followed with scores to make cut Ramapo's advantage to 4-3.  Hughes answered for Ramapo with her fourth goal of the half at 3:52 as the Roadrunners closed out the final 3:52 with a 3-0 run to take a 7-3 lead at halftime.

Bey broke the second half scoring ice with her first career goal at 28:11 to make it a 7-4 game.  Hughes added two more goals before Gallagher answered with her second goal of the game at 20:04 to pull the Panthers within 9-5.  However, two goals over the final 13:38 pushed Ramapo's lead up to six, and Old Westbury was unable to score the rest of the game.

For the Roadrunners, Hughes made her presence felt as she led all players with eight goals.  Hughes also topped the charts with seven draw controls as Katie Duca added six ground balls.  Vier Reagan stopped 13 shots in goal for Ramapo as the Roadrunners outshot the Panthers, 30-22.
