OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team opened its Skyline Conference schedule Saturday with a split at home Saturday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Purchase captured the victory in game one with a thrilling 13-12 decision before Old Westbury (1-2, 1-1 Skyline) doubled up Purchase (3-1, 1-1 Skyline) in the finale to record a 4-2 win.
In the opener, both teams combined for five lead changes with Old Westbury (grabbing the first lead with a two-run inning in the opening frame. Alexis Ferrero broke the scoring ice with an infield ground out to score Samantha Howley for the initial run followed by a run scoring single by Corrine Protasiewicz, which doubled the home Panthers' advantage.
Purchase answered with three runs in the second and one more in the third to grab a two run lead before Old Westbury responded with RBI's by Protasiewicz and Jessica Deptulski in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Purchase jumped back in front in the fourth inning with five runs off four hits to grab a 9-4 lead. Old Westbury replied with a Howley RBI single to make it a four run game in the home half of the fourth.
Purchase tacked on three more runs in the sixth before Old Westbury put together a monster seven-run sixth inning to tie the game at 12-all. Old Westbury scored five of the seven runs off bases loaded walks and the other two coming via RBI singles by Alyssa Czarnecki and Katie Rizzo.
Following a pair of walks by Old Westbury starter Nicole DeCola in the seventh, Christine Leo delivered a single that scored Christina Sanderson for the game-winning run as Old Westbury went down one-two-three in the bottom of the frame.
Howley (2-5, 2 R, RBI), Jean (2-3, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB, SB), Deptulski (2-3, 2 RBI, BB) and Delana Murray (2-4, 2 R, SB) led Old Westbury's offense with multi-hit performances.
DeCola (0-1) fanned five batters in a complete game effort and was dealt Old Westbury's loss after surrendering 13 runs off 10 hits and 19 walks.
Despite allowing seven runs on four hits and six walks, Nicole Fortuna (2-0) snagged Purchase's win in relief of starter Leo.
ToniAnn Licata's 3-for-5 game at the plate in addition to three RBI and two runs scored led the way for Purchase.
In the finale, Old Westbury jumped ahead in the third inning as Protasiewicz drilled a triple down the left field line to score Jean for the initial run.
Jean doubled Old Westbury's advantage in the fifth with a triple of her own to score Howley for a 2-0 advantage. Protasiewicz then followed with an RBI single to score Jean for the eventual game-winning run to take a 3-0 lead.
Purchase got on the board in the sixth when a wild pitch by DeCola allowed pinch runner Juliet-Rain Pagan to score and a throwing error by catcher Protasiewicz caused Mary Adams to score the second run on the play.
Old Westbury answered in the bottom of the sixth with a Jean RBI single to score Gabriella Valdes for a 4-2 advantage. Valdes reached on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Jean scored drove her in.
DeCola (1-1) bounced back to record her first career win, tossing seven strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out five.
Jean paced Old Westbury with a 2-for-2 game at the plate, including two RBI, two runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. Howley (2-4, R, SB), Protasiewicz (2-4, 2 RBI) and Murray (2-3) each registered two hits on the game.
Fortuna (2-1) was tagged with Purchase's loss, working four innings before Licata took over to close out the final two. Fortuna was charged with three runs while Licata took the other run.
Licata hit 2-for-2 with a walk to carry the big bat for Purchase in game two.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the field on Sunday (March 22) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. in Patchogue, New York.
