PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team continued Skyline Conference play Sunday afternoon with a road doubleheader against the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles in Patchogue, New York. Old Westbury (1-4, 1-3 Skyline) lost the opener to an 11-0 decision in five innings before the Golden Eagles (8-5, 3-1 Skyline) secured the sweep with an 11-3 final in game two.
St. Joseph's (L.I.) came out swinging in the first inning of the opener, jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the end of one. A second inning single from Megan Leun drove in both Gabrielle Cinquemani and Tierney to stretch the Golden Eagles' early lead to five runs. Another two-run base hit came in the third inning as Nicole Pitta drove in Samantha Carcano and Lindsey Corriss to push the Golden Eagles to an 8-0 lead. The Golden Eagles scored three more runs in the fourth to reach the final count of 11-0.
Alexis Ferrero was the lone Panther to reach base, striking a leadoff single in the fifth to break up Cassie Martinez's perfect game. Nicole DeCola (1-2) was dealt Old Westbury's loss after allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out two.
Carcano led the way offensively for St. Joseph's (L.I.) going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Martinez (4-2) kept the Panther bats at bay, earning the one-hit shutout while striking out five without issuing a single walk.
In the finale, the St Joseph's (L.I.) batters sustained their offensive showcase. Tierney broadened an early lead to 4-0 with a two-run single in the second inning to score both Cheyenne Raimondi and Carcano. The Panthers were avenged in the third, scoring three runs of their own as Jennifer Jean initiated the resurgence with a sacrifice fly to send Gabriella Valdes home. Ferrero followed Jean, finding a gap in left center field to double home Samantha Howley. Corrine Protasiewicz continued the Panther rally by lifting a single to score Ferrero, closing the gap to 4-3 after three and a half innings of play. The Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the fourth as Melanie Boccio launched a home run over the center field fence to replenish the St. Joseph's (L.I.) lead back to two runs. Another four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth for the Golden Eagles brought the game to an 11-3 conclusion.
Protasiewicz (2-2, RBI) produced her third multi-hit game of the season to lead the Panthers offense. Ferrero (1-2, RBI, R) collected Old Westbury's lone extra base hit. DeCola was given the loss, as the tossed 4.1 innings, allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 14 hits and two walks while striking out two.
For St. Joseph's (L.I.), Martinez paced the offense with a 2-for-2 game at the plate, driving in three runs. Boccio collected two RBIs of her own in the midst of a 2-for-2 showing to go along with two runs scored. Martinez was awarded the win for her two perfect innings of ball, striking out two Panthers.
YORK COLLEGE CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the field on Friday (March 28) for a non conference road doubleheader against the York Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. from Padavan-Preller Field in Bellrose, New York.
