PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's lacrosse team (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season on Thursday, defeating the Centenary Cyclones (0-2) at Danzi Stadium, 9-8.
With the score tied at 4-4 heading into the second half,
Meaghan Haber,
Sara Bey,
Courtney Gallagher and
Maria Dischley each scored in succession to put Old Westbury up, 8-4 with 11:02 remaining. Haber's goal at 23:02 put the Panthers ahead for good to open the second half scoring. Centenary answered with back-to-back Abby Voelkner goals, but Bey scored with 6:28 remaining for the eventual game-winner and her first-career hat trick. Carlie Schmitt scored with 5:49 left and Voelkner's goal with 1:15 showing on the clock made it a 9-8 game, but Old Westbury held on for its first win of the season.
Bey's three goals on six shots in addition to a pair of draw controls led the Panthers offense while Dischley and Gallagher each followed with a pair of goals. Dischley added two assists and three ground balls. Defensively,
Jackie Cartagena made a career-high 10 saves to go along with four ground balls to secure the victory.
Voelkner's four goals and Scmitt's three paced Centenary. Kristen Rabenstein scooped up five ground balls and Andrea Wisniewski made four saves.
The Cyclones had a slight 24-20 edge in shots, while the Panthers owned a 21-20 advantage in ground balls. Centenary also held an 11-5 margin in draw controls.
KEAN COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the field for a non-conference battle on Saturday (Mar. 8) afternoon, taking on the Kean Cougars in Union, New Jersey. Start time is slated for 12 p.m. from Alumni Field.
