@OW_Panthers Softball Breaks Out the Big Bats to Sweep Baruch

Old Westbury scored a season-high 16 runs in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team earned 13-3 and 16-4 run rule victories over the Baruch Bearcats Wednesday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury climbs to 9-14 with the sweep while sending the Bearcats to 2-12. 

Game One: Old Westbury 13, Baruch 3
Gabriella Valdes scored in the first inning off an error by Baruch catcher Courtney White to make it a 1-0 Panther run.  Old Westbury then went up 7-0 at the end of two innings after a two-run Katie Rizzo single and Alexis Ferrero's grand slam to put the game out of reach.  Old Westbury added six more runs in the fifth off a pair of two-run singles by Rizzo and Nicole DeCola.  Panther starter Emily McKay took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Christina Chin poked a one-out single past third base.  Two batters later, Baruch's White tripled to score two followed by Olivia Auman's RBI double to close out the scoring. 

Valdes (2-4, 3 R, RBI, SB) tied a career-high with two hits and three runs scored while Rizzo (2-4, 4 RBI, SB) set a career-high with four RBIs.  Ferrero (1-3, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R, BB), Jennifer Jean (1-3, 2 R, SB, BB) and Delana Murray (1-3, 2 R) each scored two runs.

McKay (3-4) pitched her third victory of the season with a three-hit complete game outing with five strikeouts. 

Auman (2-10) allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks in three innings to take Baruch's loss. 

Game Two: Old Westbury 16, Baruch 4
Old Westbury once again jumped ahead early as Valdes trotted across home plate for a 1-0 lead off an error by White.  Baruch evened the score in the bottom of the first with Chin scoring off second baseman Nikki Alexander's error.   Jean clubbed a two-run homer in the third and followed with a solo home run in the fifth to put Old Westbury up 4-1.  Old Westbury tacked on three more runs in the fifth with DeCola's RBI single and Alexander's two-run homer.  The Panthers erupted in the sixth for nine runs off seven hits and two errors to go up 16-1 before Baruch scored three runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the frame.   

Jean (2-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R), Alexander (3-4, HR, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 R) and DeCola (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) each drove in three of Old Westbury's season-high 16 runs to record the sweep.  Ferrero (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R) and Alexander both collected three hits while Samantha Howley (1-4, 3 R, BB) scored three runs and Valdes (2-4, RBI, 2 R, SB, BB) scores two.

DeCola (6-9) fanned a career-high seven batters and surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits and one walk to grab her sixth win of the season.

Auman (2-11) took her second loss of the day after serving up six runs (11 earned) on 15 hits and three walks.     

White (2-3, R) paced Baruch with a multi-hit game.    


SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the field on Friday (April 18) to close out their Skyline Conference schedule with a road doubleheader against the Sage Gators from Robinson Field in Troy, New York.
