NEW YORK, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team picked up 10-9 and 12-10 wins to sweep a non-conference road doubleheader against the John Jay Bloodhounds Tuesday from Randall's Island. The sweep improves the Panthers to 11-16 on the season while sending John Jay to 8-21.
Game One: Old Westbury 10, John Jay 9
The Panthers didn't waste any time in the opener, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jennifer Jean singled home Gabriella Valdes and Alexis Ferrero sent a two-run blast over the fence for to put the Panthers up early.
John Jay responded in the second as an Old Westbury error combined with RBI singles from Jennifer Pace, Danielle Minaya and Jennifer Varela pushed five runs across to give the Bloodhounds a 5-3 lead.
An offensively packed sixth inning included four runs for the Panthers and three for the Bloodhounds.
Jean and Katie Rizzo each struck RBI singles and Ferrero drove in two with a single of her own.
John Jay answered with a two-run single from Jessica Zaccari followed by another base hit from Sara McKenna to drive home Sandy Requeno, giving John Jay a 9-8 advantage at the end of six.
Samantha Howley scored on an error in the seventh to send the game to extra innings, where Corrine Protasiewicz drove home Ferrero for the game-winning run in the eighth to seal the deal for the Panthers at 10-9.
Protasiewicz (3-5, 2 RBI) compiled her seventh multi-hit game of the season to lead the way for the Panthers. Ferrero went 2-for-3, with a home run while scoring three runs and driving in a career-high four runs. DeCola's three hit performance tied a career high, while Jean (2-5, 3 R, 2 RBI), Howley (2-5, R) and Delana Murray (2-5, R) all contributed multi-hit efforts in the win. Jean extended her hitting streak to six games.
DeCola (6-6) tossed all eight innings for the Panthers to earn the victory, allowing nine runs (three earned) with a career-high ten strikeouts.
Jennifer Pace led the way for John Jay with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, with one RBI and two runs scored.
Sara McKenna (7-11) was pinned with the loss, allowing ten runs (six earned) on 16 hits in eight innings of work.
Game Two: Old Westbury 12, John Jay 10
Old Westbury never trailed in game two, as the Panther bats stayed hot. Ferrero blasted her second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the first inning. Seven Panthers crossed the plate in the third, highlighted by a three-run double from Jean to score Murray, Rizzo and Mudeline Derisma.
John Jay kept the game close, with multi-run innings in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh frames to pull within two scores, but were unable to overcome an early deficit as the Panthers held on for the 12-10 victory.
Ferrero paced the Panther charge, going 2-for-5, driving in two with her first inning home run and crossed home plate three times. Jean kept her now seven game hitting streak alive, driving in three runs in a 1-for-5 game at the plate. Protasiewicz (2-3, 2B, 3 R, RBI) also shined for Old Westbury with her eighth multi-hit game of the season. DeCola tied a career high with two RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored.
DeCola (8-11) was awarded the win, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one John Jay batter in 3.1 innings of relief.
Minaya paced the Bloodhounds in the finale with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, driving in three runs with a run scored.
Lana Kovac (1-10) took the loss for John Jay, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings of work while striking out two and walking four Panthers.
