BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team exploded for a 13-2 victory over the Baruch Bearcats Thursday afternoon in non-conference road action from MCU Park. With the win, Old Westbury climbed to 16-19 on the season while Baruch fell to 10-18.
The Panthers came out firing, scoring a pair of runs in both the first and second innings of play.
Michael Cardino opened the scoring books with a base hit to right to score
Nick Yip for Old Westbury's early advantage.
Robinson Hernandez followed, stroking a sacrifice hit to score
John Angelino to close out the first inning scoring.
Yip delivered in the second frame, sending a two-run triple to right center to give Old Westbury a 4-0 edge.
Big innings came again for the Panthers in the sixth and seventh.
Tommy Ziegen produced a two-run single to close out the sixth inning after the Panthers scored on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch earlier in the frame.
In the seventh, Jacob Conors smashed a home run over the center field fence for his second big fly of the season. Angelino followed suit, collecting an RBI triple to center, scoring
Alexander Abanavas. Old Westbury tacked on a two more runs with
Byron White's RBI double and a Hernandez sacrifice fly to bring the Panthers' final scoring total to 13 runs.
Baruch scratched runs across in the fifth and ninth innings, concluding the game at a 13-2 deficit.
Yip set a career-high in hits, going 4-for-5 on the day, driving in two runs with one run scored. Ziegen drove in three runs (tied career-high) in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Conors (2-4, HR, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB) and White (3-6, 2 R, RBI) also hit the ball well for Old Westbury. Hernandez stole a career-best three bases out of Old Westbury's nine thefts on the day.
Frank DiMaria (1-3) earned the win, pitching seven innings of one run, five hit ball. DiMaria struck out four while walking only one Bearcat on the day.
Angel Tejeda (2-4, HR) paced Baruch offensively.
Connor Henson (1-3) was pinned with the loss for Baruch, as he surrendered five runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work.
