NEWBURGH, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team split a Skyline Conference road doubleheader Sunday afternoon with the Mount Saint Mary Knights in Newburgh, New York. The Knights took the opener with a 3-0 final before Old Westbury bounced back to claim the rubber game with a 12-4 victory. Old Westbury (6-7) now stands at 2-6 in conference play while sending the Knights (16-8) to 8-2.
In the opener, Mount Saint Mary threatened in the second inning, but Panther starter Nicole DeCola was not fazed and kept her cool to escape out of the jam. DeCola committed a fielding error to Stephanie Karcher to leadoff the frame. Karcher then advanced on a ground out and moved over to third off a wild pitch. DeCola settled down and forced Sabrina Gordek into a pop out to end the inning.
Old Westbury's best scoring opportunity came in the third when Delana Murray and Gabriella Valdes each stroked back-to-back singles. Jennifer Jean followed by grounding into a fielder's choice which got Valdes out at second and an interference call on Murray left the Panthers scoreless at the end of three.
The Knights scored two runs in the fourth as Karcher's one-out single set to table. Michelle Surdan then reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Alexis Ferrero combined with a throwing error by first baseman Katie Rizzo to score Karcher for the eventual game-winning run which advanced Surdan over to second. Surdan moved over to third on a wild pitch and then scored off Gordek's infield grounder.
Mount Saint Mary tacked on an insurance run in the sixth by scoring Danielle Soto off Breanna Depasquale's ground out.
Valdes' third inning single was Old Westbury's final hit of the game as the Knights held a slim 4-3 advantage in hits.
DeCola (4-5) was dealt Old Westbury's loss after allowing three unearned runs on four hits in six innings of work inside the circle. Old Westbury committed six errors and stranded four runners on base.
Victoria Goldbach (6-2) tossed a three-hit complete game shutout by striking out six and handing out two free passes.
In the finale, Old Westbury jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Panthers tacked on four more runs in the second and two more runs in the third to take a 9-4 lead. Old Westbury added a pair of runs in the fifth and a solo run in the seventh to claim a 12-4 victory. Old Westbury tallied a season-high 12 runs and 18 hits and tied a season-high with three extra base hits.
Jennifer Jean collected a career-best five hits after turning in a 5-for-5 game at the plate with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. Jean delivered a two-run single in the third and closed out the scoring books in the seventh with an RBI double to extend her hitting streak to seven games.
