KINGS POINT, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's lacrosse team captured a record setting 18-4 decision over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners in non-conference road action Tuesday evening in Kings Point. The win set a single season wins record for the Panthers to improve to 3-9 on the season while sending the Mariners to 1-6.
Old Westbury hit the ground running with goals from five different Panthers in the first half. Maria Dischley started the attack just 55 seconds into play and finished the opening half with three goals to net her first career hat trick. Dischely's third goal was scored with 10:43 remaining in the half, which gave Old Westbury an 8-0 lead. Following a USMMA goal at 9:06 by Alexandra Winfree, Courtney Gallagher scored her second goal of the half while Sara Bey added her third with 4:04 showing on the clock. Katie Noonan scored with six seconds left for USMMA as the Panthers held a 10-2 advantage at the half. Gabriella Rayan and Meaghan Haber also added first half scores as the Panthers held a 19-8 edge in shots at the end of 30 minutes.
Haber opened the second half scoring at 29:47 while Gallagher and Jessica Walker each scored over the next 2:45. Winfree added two more goals for the Mariners while Haber and Walker both score one more and Bey registered three more to close out the scoring. Bey's final score with 23 seconds left was Old Westbury's 18th goal of the game, which tied Old Westbury's single game record originally set March 19, 2013 vs. USMMA, the same game in which the Panthers recorded its first ever win.
Bey turned in her program record fifth hat trick of the season to go along with three draw controls. Bey also set a program record in the first half at 18:13 with her second game-winner of the season. Dischley controlled a program record eight draws, which broke Gallagher's mark of seven, which was set April 14, 2013 vs. St. Joseph's (L.I.).
Dischley's hat trick was the first of her career while also contributing three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Dischley and Gallagher both extended their program record scoring streaks, finding the net in nine consecutive games. Gallagher's hat trick was her fourth career while adding three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Haber finished with a career-high three goals in addition to contributing three draw controls (tied career-high), two caused turnovers and two ground balls while Walker added her fourth career multi-goal game.
Old Westbury also set a program record with four hat tricks, breaking the previous mark of three set vs. USMMA (March 19, 2013).
Caitlin Thomas chipped in with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Jackie Cartagena (3-9) stopped four shots in Old Westbury's cage to record her program record third win of the season.
Kelly Allison (0-3) made six save in defeat for the Mariners while Winfree added three goals and three grounds balls.
As a team, Old Westbury held the edge in shots (32-15), shots on goal (24-8) and draw controls (17-7). Old Westbury's 17 draw controls set a program record, eclipsing the previous high of 15 (March 19, 2013 vs. USMMA).
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the field for a Skyline Conference road battle on Thursday (Apr. 10) against the Farmingdale State Rams. Start time is slated for 3 p.m. in Farmingdale, New York.
