Pentz's career day leads @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball at Sage

Raven Pentz scored a career-high 23 points in Monday’s Skyline Conference road game

ALBANY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team let a Skyline Conference road win slip away as the Sage Gators held a 35-18 second-half scoring advantage to claim Monday's 60-54 final from Kahl Gymnasium.  Old Westbury (7-7) moves to 1-1 in conference play while Sage (6-4) also evened up at 1-1.

Both teams struggled offensively early on, combining to miss on their first seven shots while Old Westbury failed to put up its first attempt until 2:08 into play.  It wasn't until the 17:34 mark when Olivia Ilardi broke the scoring ice off a jumper to put Old Westbury out in front, 2-0.  Ilardi followed with a three pointer while Crystal Barnes added a three-point play to give Old Westbury an 8-0 advantage with 16:39 remaining.  Moments later, Ilardi knocked down another triple to extend the Panthers' lead to 12 points (21-9) with 11:37 left.  Old Westbury stretched its first-half lead to 14 points before a 10-2 Sage run from 7:10 to 3:03 pulled the Gators within six points (29-23).  Old Westbury answered with a 5-0 Raven Pentz run over the final 1:51 to put the Panthers up 36-25 at the half.

Old Westbury's lead swelled to as many as 12 points in the second half when Pentz's triple made it a 46-34 game with 14:58 showing on the clock.  Sage battled its way back with a 15-4 run to trim its deficit to one point with 6:51 to go in the game.  Sage continued to ride its momentum and gained its first lead of the game (55-54) with 2:57 remaining off a pair of Sara Tironi free throws.  Sage's defense once again stifled the Panthers, holding the visitors scoreless over the final 3:19 to seize the win.  Sage closed out the final 14:07 with a 26-8 run, which saw the Panthers shoot just 3-of-19 from the field with 10 turnovers over that span.

Pentz poured in a career-best 23 points (10-22 FG) to go along with a six assists and two steals in defeat for the Panthers.  Ilardi followed with 11 points and Kendra Jordan nabbed a career-high four steals.  Chloe Mellon added three blocks while Barnes swatted two shots in addition to pulling down a team-leading eight rebounds.

Meagan Bowman's 16 points led three other Gators in double-digit scoring.  Bowman also contributed six assists and five steals to her stat line while Amie Jefferson went for 13 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks.  Genevieve Schoff registered 14 points and nine rebounds while Tironi chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 37.3 percent from the field (22-59), 29.4 percent from three-point range (5-17) and 55.6 percent from the free-throw line while Sage hit 29.7 percent from the floor (19-64), 25 percent from beyond the arc (5-20) and 70.8 percent from the charity stripe (17-24).  Sage won the boards battle, 51-34, scoring 10 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury scored 23 points off 22 Sage turnovers while the Gators converted 21 Panther miscues into just nine points.
