Pentz’s 18 points pace @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball at Farmingdale State

Raven Pentz poured in a game-high 18 points to lead Old Westbury in scoring for the third-straight game


FARMINGDALE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team fell 68-52 on the road Thursday evening against the Farmingdale State Rams in Skyline Conference play from Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.  With the loss, Old Westbury (7-8) moves to 1-2 in conference play while the Rams (6-7) improved to 2-0.

Farmingdale State opened with seven unanswered points before Raven Pentz sank the backend free throw of her trip to the line put the Panthers on the board.  Olivia Ilardi then connected on a triple to make it a three-point game (7-4) with 15:55 remaining.  Moments later, Crystal Barnes knocked down a pair of free throws to trim the Rams' lead to one (15-14) with 10:52 left.  Farmingdale State answered with a 16-0 spurt until Clarissa Gallagher drained a three pointer at the 5:20 mark to stop the Rams' run to make it a 31-17 game.  Farmingdale State closed out the final 4:14 with a 9-3 run to take a 40-20 lead into the half.    

Old Westbury came out of the locker room determined to cut its deficit and used a 13-5 run to make it a 45-33 game with 14:03 remaining.  Farmingdale State countered with an 11-1 run from 13:26 to 9:06 to take a 22-point (56-34) lead for its largest advantage of the game.   Down by 21 points with 4:56 showing on the second-half clock, Old Westbury scored eight of the game's final 11 points to make it a 68-52 final. 

Pentz poured in a game-high 18 points to lead the Panthers.  Pentz also tied a career-high with five triples in seven attempts while grabbing a season-best eight rebounds.  Gallagher followed with 16 points (4-9 3FG) and eight rebounds off the bench.  Barnes swatted a game-high four shots to go along with seven rebounds while Danielle Waithe nabbed a career-best three steals off the bench.

Nicole Lanteri's 16 points and five assists (game-high) paced the Rams to victory.  Andrea Desvignes followed with 15 points and eight rebounds while Marlaina Sherman chipped in with 13 points and two blocks.  Nailah Cherry contributed four steals and eight rebounds to the win.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 29 percent from the field (18-62), 37 percent from three-point territory (10-27) and 50 percent from the free-throw line (6-12) while Farmingdale State connected on 35.9 percent from the floor (28-78), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (5-15) and 58.3 percent from the charity stripe (7-12).  The Rams won the boards battle, 56-45, scoring 23 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds compared to Old Westbury's 21 points off 16 offensive boards.  Old Westbury's 27 turnovers were converted into 25 Ram points as Farmingdale State also held the advantage in assists (18-8), steals (16-9) and points in the paint (32-12) while Old Westbury held a 6-3 edge in blocks.      


PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury will look to bounce back on Saturday (Jan. 17) when they travel to take on the Purchase Panthers in a Skyline Conferene battle at 12 p.m. from Purchase College Gymnasium in Purchase, New York.
