Leroy’s double-double leads @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball past Mount Saint Mary

Old Westbury improved to 4-3 in Skyline Conference play with Thursday’s 69-57 home win

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team improved to 3-1 on its home court in Skyline Conference play after defeating the Mount Saint Mary Knights 69-57 on Thursday evening from Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (4-10) now stands at 4-3 in conference action while sending the Knights (4-9) to 3-3.

Old Westbury knocked down 6-of-10 from the field to open the game with a 13-3 lead just 5:43 into play to grab control early on.  Mount Saint Mary later found its way back into the game with a 12-5 run to cut its deficit to five points, making it a 24-19 contest with 4:59 remaining.  Old Westbury held on to extend its lead to 11 points with 1:42 left before taking a 34-26 advantage into the half. 

Mount Saint Mary scored seven unanswered points as part of a 12-3 run over the opening 4:20 of the second half to grab a 38-37 advantage for its lone lead of the game.   Old Westbury answered with a Floyd Leroy layup to put the Panthers up for good, which sparked an 8-3 run for a 47-41 advantage.  Old Westbury used a 10-3 run down the stretch to build up a game-high 15-point lead with 52 seconds remaining to secure the victory. 

Leroy scored a game-high 20 points (7-15 FG) to go along with 15 rebounds (tied career-high) to record his fifth-career double-double.  Leroy added four blocks while Mark Gjonlekaj swatted three off the bench.  Luckens Victors netted 11 points (5-7) and grabbed eight rebounds while Omari Trebuse contributed 11 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals.  Reynaldo Walters dished out five assists in 17 minutes off the bench.

Daniel Wolf led the way for the Knights with 14 points (3-6 3FG), nine rebounds and two steals.  Gerard Nocera and Alex Smith each followed with 11 points.        

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 45.5 percent from the field (25-55), 42.9 percent from three-point range (6-14) and 59.1 percent from the free-throw line (13-22) while Mount Saint Mary hit 35 percent from the floor (21-60), 30 percent from beyond the arc (6-20) and 69.2 percent from the charity stripe (9-13).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 45-32, scoring 10 second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in assists (16-11), blocks (8-2), points in the paint (34-24) and fast-break scoring while Mount Saint Mary nabbed six steals compared to the Panthers' three.

CANCER SUITS & SNEAKERS GAME AGAINST THE FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury will look to extend its win streak next Thursday (Jan. 22) when they host the Farmingdale State Rams for an NABC Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers Skyline Conference showdown at 6 p.m.
